* DrivenToMurder: [[spoiler:Justified, as it was in self-defense. He gives Jim a DisneyVillainDeath after impaling him with his scissors]].

* ReiAyanamiExpy: While he lacks the more outlandish hair and eye colors, [[LooksLikeCesare his appearance]] still stands out from the rest of the population of Suburbia. Aside from that he ticks many of the boxes, as he's an ArtificialHuman who was created in a gothic castle by a MadScientist as his son, has pale skin, is largely stoic and quiet, appears to have shown affection for his long-dead creator, and becomes the LoveInterest for Kim Boggs. His bladed fingers due to his creator dying from old age right when he was going to give him regular human hands also adds to his otherworly character. Also his face is CoveredWithScars due to bladed fingers. As the film came out five years before ''Evangelion'' debuted, he could be considered a proto-example of this.

* OnlySaneMan: Throughout both acts of the film, for different reasons in each.

* ShrinkingViolet: She tends to get steamrolled by her noisier, pushier neighbours.
* WomenAreWiser: Compared to her absurdly oblivious husband, Peg is far more aware of the situation when things go sour for Edward.

* KickTheSonOfABitch: Edward killing someone probably would’ve been terrifying if it wasn’t [[spoiler: Jim]].

* BitchInSheepsClothing: At first, he seems like a rather nice and decent guy. However his true are revealed as a cruel, possessive asshole and thug when he breaks into his own parents house to steal and frames Edward for it, as well as trying to keep Edward and Kim apart.

* FreudianExcuse: His Abusive dad is the reason he’s such an asshole.

* DrunkDriver / AlcoholInducedIdiocy: Later on in the movie, he's drinking whisky while driving his van and nearly runs over Kim's little brother (who Edward rescues).

* AmbiguousDisorder: Edward has been speculated as being a metaphor for autism and related disorders. One particularly notable thing is the way the film portrays people's ''reactions'' to him. While one might see the fascination most of the neighborhood has with him as being parodic of the stereotype of 1970s suburbanites being closed-minded, it's also perfectly apt for the post-''Film/RainMan'' world of the late '80s and early '90s, when there was widespread interest in the savant abilities possessed by some autistics.

* NoSocialSkills: Downplayed. He's always polite and friendly to people, however because he spent years sheltered from the outside world, he isn't particularly good at interacting with people, which might explain why he's often quiet and shy.

* CumbersomeClaws: Edward's dying creator was in the process of finishing his body with normal human hands, but Edward accidentally cut up the hands with the scissor-and-shear limbs he already had, leaving him stuck with those. He's able to do surprisingly artistic things with his scissor hands like bush sculpting and hairstyling, but he also has mishaps like puncturing a WackyWaterbed and electrocuting himself when he stabs a microphone cable. His own face is CoveredWithScars because of all his attempts at self-care with his sharp digits. And he always has to be careful when it comes to physical affection with others.

* TheStoic: He isn't particularly expressive, nor does he say very much. And when he is expressive, he usually lets his body language do the talking.

* AffablyEvil: Jim is either this or FauxAffablyEvil. While he is hostile towards Edward, he is rather friendly towards everyone else, though it's unclear whether it's genuine or not

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Of course, no amount of suffering in his past justifies the loathsome asshole he is, now.

* ClassicalAntiHero: Edward is kind and sweet as can be, but his naïveté leads to him being taken advantage of.
