* GreaterScopeVillain: Really, despite his comparatively low screentime, one could make a pretty good argument for him warranting his own page just due to his ''overall'' significance to the wider plot. Between assisting the rise of Red Ribbon originally, creating Androids 17 & 18 and their resulting future rampage, creating 17 & 18 ''period'' out of a pair of unwilling teens, attempting to hunt down Goku with all the Androids, creating Cell, causing 17 to go Super in ''GT'', and in the deutero-canonical ''VideoGame/DragonballFighterZ'' [[spoiler:Androidizing the woman implied to be ''his own goddamn wife'' and mother of his son and her resulting suffering and rampage]], he's responsible for more death and suffering for our heroes across the franchise than nearly any other ''Dragonball'' villain. The only people who can even ''remotely'' compare are Frieza and Zamasu.

* HiddenDepths: Loved his deceased son enough to devote his time modelling Android 16 after him. Makes him more powerful than 17 and 18, but giving a gentle programming to avoid combat so he would outlive him. Needless to say, 17 and 18 meddling to bring about his activation, [[DontTouchItYouIdiot really pisses the old guy off.]]

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: According to a recent interview with Akira Toriyama, Gero based Android #16's design off his dead son who was a former Red Ribbon army soldier felled by a bullet. Gero, having a special place in his heart for his son, gave 16 great power and his explosive mechanism. But, not wanting him to be destroyed in battle if possible gave him a gentle personality which caused #16 to be considered a "failed model".

** Their BadFuture counterparts are this to the homegrown Saiyans. Those two share their sadistic {{jerkass}} tendencies and, Eighteen's small dose of standards aside, complete disregard for life outside their own kind. However, the Saiyans lived in a controlled galactic empire that cultivated and harnessed this into a most efficient form of planet plundering. The future twins, on the other hand, got that way through little more than hatred both personal and programmed, their reach is limited to Earth, they leave a few people (and shreds of civilization) alive but slowly rotting in fear and suffering for over two decades, and let's face it--they are entirely '''out''' of control.

* {{Sadist}}: Their future counterparts. They spent decades slowly torturing the people of Earth with running them over with cars, shooting them while they're running, and promising to spare them only to kill them anyway. That's not even getting started on how they treated beating Future Gohan and Future Trunks to near death like it is a game.

* {{Jerkass}}: Future Android 17. Both Androids of the future are callous, selfish bastards, but Future Android 17's antics even manage to upset Future Android 18. For example, Future Android 18 decided to spare the life of a shop owner because he was nice to her, but even after hearing that, Future Android 17 killed the shop owner by blowing up his store. Later, Future Android 18 is shown to be very upset because Future Android 17 killed a boy she liked. Android 18 even says that Android 17 goes out of his way to destroy everything she likes. The Future Android 17 also appears to be considerably more bloodthirsty than Future Android 18, as while Android 18 will eventually grow bored of all the destruction the two of them are always causing, Android 17 can't seem to have enough of it.

[[folder:Future Android 17 and Future Android 18]]

In the [[BadFuture Future Timeline]], they go on a rampage across the Earth, causing destruction and chaos. Even the Z Fighters end up dead at their hands, leaving Future Trunks the only one capable of stopping them. In the main timeline they're more subdued deciding to only focus on finding and fighting Goku -- 18, in particular, seems to hardly care about fighting at all and only does so when forced. The reasons for this are unknown, though Future Trunks theorizes that it's some kind of side effect from his time travels. The two eventually turn out to be the necessary sacrifices for Gero's greatest creation, Cell, who absorbs them to attain his perfect form. Thankfully, the Z Fighters manage to save them from this fate during their battle against him.

After ''Z'', they both take some precedence again in ''GT''[='=]s Super 17 arc. In ''Super'', both Androids take part in the Tournament of Power to survive with their universe.

[[folder:General]]
* NinetiesHair: Both Androids have them. 17 sports the curtain hairstyle, while 18 has a slick Rachel. They ''were'' conceived by Toriyama around that time period, after all.
* AffablyEvil: The friendliest killer robots you'll ever meet.
* AIIsACrapshoot: Dr. Gero couldn't create an android evil/obedient or powerful enough to carry out his desires to rule the world or destroy Goku to save his life - until he "made" these two. Or so it seems... except he can't control them at all, and it turns out they're always just waiting for him to let his guard down so they can off him permanently. Its also implied that their BadFuture versions wanted to kill all humans because Dr. Gero preprogrammed them to hate humans so he could use them to conquer the world.
* AxCrazy: The androids from Future Trunks's timeline took great enjoyment from murder and wanton destruction. Compared to the androids from the main timeline, they were also much less mentally stable. One example of this is Android 18's reaction to being struck by Future Trunks once he returned to his timeline at the end of the Cell Saga. The main timeline's Android 18 did not lose her composure even when she was being hit by Vegeta or later on by Mighty Mask, and even when she fought Cell, who was vastly more powerful than her, she appeared to be more scared than angry and nevertheless managed to remain fairly rational given the circumstances. The Android 18 from Future Trunks's timeline, on the other hand, became very enraged and attacked Future Trunks while at the same time vocalizing all the hatred she felt for him.
* BlessedWithSuck: WordOfGod [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/db-full-color-artificial-humans-cell-arc-06/ is that]] due to their android enhancements, they age ''very'' slowly, which means that they will survive their spouses and possibly their children, stuck in the same, unchanging body for a long, ''long'' time, watching every person they ever loved grow old and die, and while aging slowly may allow them to enjoy a long life in a youthful body, it also means they will eventually have to live a long time as ''old'' people, with each biological year lasting at ''least'' twice or three times as long as a normal human's. Imagine being in your seventies for two decades.
* BrotherSisterTeam: They're actually siblings and work well together as a team.
* CreepyTwins: At first. They both spoke in monotone voices and don't seem to show much emotions outside of dull surprise. In the alternative timeline with Future Trunks, they are creepy twins who only show emotion when they are killing people.
* {{Cyborg}}: Contrary to their "names", they are actually humans turned cyborgs under the Android project, and their "enhancements" are actually made out of organic substances, as with the "bioborgs" of ''{{TabletopGame/Rifts}}'' or the Space Marines of ''{{TabletopGame/Warhammer 40000}}''. Some translations correct this by referring to them as "C-17" and "C-18", with "C" being short for "cyborg" (which creates an inconsistency with "C-16", who actually ''is'' an android).
* {{Determinator}}: Gero kidnapped them and turned them into semi-androids to begin with, even destroying their human memories in the process, then proceeded to repeatedly manipulate their programming and turn them on and off at will in trying to control them. That they retained their sense of independence through all that is a feat in and of itself.
* TheDogBitesBack: After all the abuse they undoubtedly withstood in turning them into what they are, 17 and 18 killed Gero as soon as they got the chance.
* DragonAscendant: After they killed Gero, they became the primary threat to the Earth.
* TheDreaded: In Trunks' timeline. They reduced the human populations to tens of thousands, and forced many of them underground.
* FantasticRacism: Future Androids 17 and 18 despises anyone who isn't like them. This is justified since Dr. Gero specially programmed them to hate humans to make them more effective killers.
* {{Foil}}:
** The main timeline versions are also Foils to the versions from Trunks's future. While the latter are sociopaths whose idea of fun is mass murder, the former merely create mayhem for their entertainment and have consciences. The twin androids are the only characters whose personalities are intrinsically different in the two timelines for unclear reasons (for Trunks, the differences are obviously due to how he was raised).
* FreudianExcuse: It's implied that their sociopathic tendencies in the special was the direct result of Future Gero's plans for world domination, having apparently programmed them to have a hatred of humanity so he could then manipulate them into aiding him in conquering the planet.
* GoneHorriblyRight:Future Gero was trying to perfect his Android technology after his previous experiments fell short of the mark, and chose to implement some special experimental OrganicTechnology in them, and settled for technology he knew was comparatively antiquated but safe to implement when converting himself into an Android. They turn out to be highly erratic and destructive from the moment they awaken, and dispatch their own creator moments after being activated by easily overpowering him, since he gave himself a weaker body. The reason why the Androids are even worse than the those of the good future is implied to be because Future Gero dismantled Future 16 in this timeline after Goku died, which had rendered that Android pointless, and then he instead devoted his time to making Future 17 and Future 18 more hateful towards humans (and possibly cannibalized Future 16's programming circuits into them), causing them to become more monstrous in their attitudes.
* GradualGrinder: For those who fought them, it's been noted that even if they were equal at first, they would eventually run out of stamina while the Androids would remain at full power.
* HalfIdenticalTwins: Future 17 is a brunet while Future 18 is a blonde, but they do look alike at least in facial features.
* HandBlast: Considering they don't actually use ki, they shoot some artificial-type of energy instead.
* HeroKiller: Future Androids 17 and Future 18 killed all the Z fighters of their timeline except for Trunks.
* IcyBlueEyes: Both of them, icy cold ones.
* {{Irony}}: The Future 17 and Future 18 from Future Trunks' timeline enjoy overwhelming, terrorizing, and killing humans. Trunks did the same thing to them before killing them when he returned to the future.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: Because of the nature of ''History of Trunks'', the future androids are never made to pay for their crimes. When Trunks does try to avenge Gohan's death, he is nearly killed. It will be another three years after the special ends before the androids get their just desserts.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: Future Dr. Gero created all manner of killer androids, all out of IrrationalHatred for Future Goku for destroying the Red Ribbon Army, on top of being a SmugSnake, so not one tear was shed when Future Androids 17 and 18 also killed him.
* KillerRobot: Though more "killer" than "robot" to be accurate. In fact, they were ''too'' killer for Gero to keep under control.
* KarmicDeath: The Androids cruelly murdered Future Gohan, and then eventually get slaughtered by his protege, who gained the ability to turn Super Saiyan in the wake of his mentor's death.
* LimitedWardrobe:
** Despite Future 18's love for clothing, they wear the same outfits for their entire reign (Future 17 even mentioning he has several of the same shirt).
* MeaningfulName: They're named for a deep blue, semi-precious stone. Rather appropriate for a pair of very pretty people with striking blue eyes.
* MookHorrorShow: The two future Androids are subjected to this by Future Trunks when he gets back. Future Trunks explicitly stated that [[PayEvilUntoEvil he's dishing out to them exactly that they did to Future Gohan before they killed him]], making it a poetic form of justice.
* NoNameGiven: Their real names are never revealed and they are referred to only by their respective numerical designations. [[http://www.saiyanisland.com/2014/05/akira-toriyama-reveals/ Toriyama later revealed]] that Future 17 and Future 18's true names are (respectively) [[PunnyName Lapis and Lazuli]].
* OlderThanTheyLook: Since their bodies age very slowly.
* OrganicTechnology: Their cybernetics are largely organic on a cellular level, rather than mechanical.
* OutsideContextProblem: Like all the androids, they have no energy that can be detected, making them nearly impossible to track. They also have [[PerpetualMotionMonster an endless power supply]] meaning that they can never grow tired or weak from fighting too long. The only true way to beat them is to overwhelm them since they will always win a prolonged battle.
* PaleFemalesDarkMales: In addition to having black hair to his sister's blond, Future 17 also has noticeably darker skin than Future 18.
* PerpetualMotionMonster: Their main strength. They have infinite energy generators inside them that prevent them from ever tiring out. In addition, [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/db-full-color-artificial-humans-cell-arc-06/ they don't need to eat (but still require hydration)]].
* PostFinalBoss: Future 17 and Future 18 serve as this for the Android Saga. Future Trunks gets an episode to himself to clean up the last loose ends in his timeline, starting with them.
* PsychopathicManchild: Future 17 and Future 18 take type B of this to its darkest logical extreme, going on random mass murdering sprees over the course of 20 years and ''actually keeping score of the kills''.
* PunnyName: As per ''Dragon Ball'' tradition, their human names are Lapis (for Future 17) and Lazuli (for Future 18).
* TheRunaway: It's heavily implied they were this prior to getting kidnapped and experimented on by Future Dr. Gero.
* RedOniBlueOni: Future Android 17 is the red oni and Future Android 18 is the blue oni. While Future 18 seems to hardly care about fighting at all and only does so when forced, Future 17, while usually being as stoic as his sister, is almost giddy every time somebody challenges him to a fight during the Android saga, and even more than once proclaims himself to be the strongest Android.
* RockThemeNaming: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_lazuli Lapis lazuli]] is a famous type of semi-precious stone, quite beloved for its blue tone.
* SelfDestructMechanism: Both have one.
* TheStarscream: To Future Dr. Gero, they kill him the first chance they get.
* StoneWall: Their enhancements give them infinite energy, and the fact that they're still mostly human means they can still train to be stronger. As long as their opponents aren't too powerful in comparison, they can win through attrition.
* StoryBreakerPower: Not only do they have infinite energy, but because they're organic they can train themselves to increase their strength -- so long as their opponent isn't stronger by a wide margin, they could practically defeat anyone through endurance alone, to say nothing of the strategic advantage of being nearly undetectable.
* TeensAreMonsters: They ruthlessly murder people for their own pleasure and killed all the Z-Fighters leaving only Trunks the sole survivor.
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: The two androids who caused killed all the Z-Fighters, look just like regular people you see on the street. Justified because they're actually cyborgs who are still mostly human.
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters: The very first thing they do upon activation is kill Dr. Gero.
* TragicVillain: They were forcibly made into evil androids by Dr. Gero rather than of their own free will. Neither is very happy with their situation, but have both come to make the most of it.
* TheUnfought: Goku in never fought them having died of the heart virus.
* VictoryIsBoring: Implied to be the reason why they dragged out their fights with Future Gohan as long as they did. In fact, when Trunks returns from the past and Future 18 decides to kill him to blow off steam, Future 17 points out to Future 18 that they'll be throwing away weeks worth of fun if she does; Future 18 doesn't care.
