The VillainProtagonist himself, [[PlayerCharacter Coal]] was a simple Black Agumon who began his journey to power in Native Forest, a calm oasis compared to the other dangerous areas that help make up [[DeathWorld File Island]]. Born completely normal and with none of the absurd growth rates some other Digimon are lucky enough to have, Coal had to hunt for his own survival each and every day, fighting against his fellow Digimon for both food and power.

A Digimon of [[TheQuietOne few words]], Coal's own quiet existence, at least by Digimon standards, was shaken up completely when he ran across [[spoiler: Impmon]], a Digimon who would later go on to become [[FireForgedFriends Coal's most stalwart companion.]] With the [[spoiler: death of Kunemon by Greymon's hands]] and the attention of [[spoiler: some of the Demon Lords themselves]], Coal now has to tread even more carefully, lest he be [[CurbStompBattle utterly wiped out]] by the larger-than-life fish he now finds himself sharing a pond with. Of course, with his quest for revenge firmly in mind and a [[{{Pride}} prideful]] personality that isn't just going to let him quit, he could very well find himself eventually standing on the same level as gods. All it takes is [[BreakingTheFourthWall you]].

* ActionDad: Being a father doesn't deter Coal from adventuring, kicking asses and taking names.
* AnAdventurerIsYou: Coal wears his armor almost all the time and can take punishment like a champ.
* AFriendinNeed: A lesson he absolutely learned from Arbormon. It shows when he was willing to let Strings beat on him for a while and then afterwards go through a series of "tests" that would have killed him...tests where he proved himself when he instantly cut off his own arm the moment he was told to.
* AndThisIsFor: When Coal killed Gotsumon after beating him to the ground.
* AdmiringTheAbomination: While everyone else can't help but flinch back upon first seeing Calmaramon, Coal's first reaction was to admire her new form, both for its strength and [[spoiler: the beauty of his soon-to-be wife]].
* ArsonMurderandJaywalking: There are few thing Coal can not stand incompetence, corruption (unless he is benefiting in some way), cruelty for no reason (with reason is a grey area), and people looking at his wife in a non platonic way in his presence.
* BadassFamily: Coal and Rain have formed quite a horde of extremely-strong children and neither of them are in any way weak as well.
* BadassInCharge: When you're a powerful Ultimate in charge of a bunch of low-tier, bottom of the barrel Rookies, you definitely qualify. Nowadays, Coal can usually be found leading a small group of battle-hardened Digimon whenever he's sent out on a mission.
* BeingPersonalIsntProfessional: Coal can't really be described as especially social even when he's not working on something for Lilithmon or Sovrano, the fact that he usually has something vitally important to be focusing on when he is working doesn't really help when it comes to breaking Coal out of his [[TheQuietOne quiet, closed-off demeanor.]]
* BerserkButton: Gotsumon, Agumon and Duskmon's entire existence is basically enough to have Coal furious. It's also been shown that he's not a fan of partner Digimon who rely on their human for power, or those who are needlessly cruel to their subordinates like Phelesmon.
* {{BFS}}: Coal possesses this as a Knightmon and he puts it to good use.
* BreathWeapon: Naturally, as a Black Agumon, he could spit fireballs at will. He has since lost the ability to do so, however.
* BrokenAce: Over the course of his journey Coal has become one of the most powerful, respected, and infamous digimon in the digital world. However all the pain and loss he's experience during said journey has left him with a large amount of mental trauma that has caused him to fall into HeroicBSOD several times.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Coal has frequently managed to defeat opponents who should be way out of his league, but has been injured so badly that it takes weeks to fully recover from the damage his opponents inflicted.
* CastFromHitPoints: Coal's equipment the Grey Sword and Brave Shield created from the leftover data of Black War Greymon. Because it's crafted from the data of a digimon a level higher than him they strain his body while providing a huge power boost.
* ChallengeSeeker: Coal doesn't enjoy cutting down weak foes, much preferring to fight those who would give him the best fight and, as a result, the best data.
* CharacterDevelopment: When he was still a Black Agumon, Coal was extremely blind to anything that wasn't fighting or survival in general, like having to have Sovrano [[ObliviousToLove explain what Rain's affection actually meant]] but he's since learned more about the world in general and slightly loosened up. He's still rather cold and stern when it comes to just about every situation but the fact that he's started to indulge in trivial hobbies like card games or become so invested in his marriage and his children's lives is a lot better than when he was a lonely Black Agumon.
* CodeOfHonor: Coal has his own moral code, mostly the refusal to fight someone who is outstandingly weak, like an In-Training or Fresh-level Digimon who are essentially babies.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler:Coal ended up getting beaten down by machindramon over and over again, before finally taking the Mega digimons strongest in order to save Sovrano. Coal died just a little bit later from his wounds, and from being impaled from the various debris. All the while he had a tear jerking discussion with Sovrano.]]
* DeathGlare: Just about every time Coal runs into the likes of, say, Duskmon, Grumblemon or his rival, he's trying to glare a hole in their head.
* {{Determinator}}: If there's one thing Coal won't do, it's give up on either his ambitions or something that he's set his mind on. It's due to a combination of this and his own [[{{Pride}} prideful personality]] that lets him stay conscious and continue fighting long past the point where he should've fallen unconscious.
* DinosaursAreDragons: The miniature T-Rex that is Black Agumon, and the not-so miniature Dark Tyrannomon, are technically classified as dragons.
* DoYouWantToHaggle: Coal spent half a day working as a seller for Monochromon's shop. His haggling skill was so good that he later managed to lower an item's price to 0.1% its original price (though only thanks to some help from Sovrano to trick the shopkeeper).
* EnragedByIdiocy: Coal doesn't enjoy being in the presence of those who are, in his eyes, completely idiotic. Case in point, he almost killed Perry when the paranoid Penguinmon wouldn't stop screaming and rolling around in the snow or Gotsumon in general.
* EveryoneIsRelated: This is becoming a theme in the thread for the sheer fact that characters once thought to be family through choice is actually family or enemies one way or another. These characters include: Inari, Mummymon, Arukenimon, Myotismon, Cain, Suzuka, Char, Gol, Mirage though a data transplant and Lilithmon, Daemon, and Sovrano through his sister's marriage. More are sure to come, though it is Justified in that Coal befriended the first Digimon born by what is now known as Data Fusion and is thus drawn into many of the familial politics which existed between the few Digimon at the top.
* EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs: Especially when those dinosaurs could breathe fire and were the size of buildings.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Coal has a happy marriage with Rain. They currently have two kids together.
* {{Expy}}: Of Jerid Messa from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Seeks revenge for the deaths of loved ones and will not let anything stand in the way of that revenge if he can so help it. His son who is just like him even lived out the infamous scenario of getting punched for alluding to someone's name sounding like a girl's name.
** Also of Aoshi from Rurouni Kenshin thanks to being a cold and stoic seeker of revenge whose vendetta begins after someone he cares about dies for him. Other examples exist such as Darius ''(survival of the fittest mentality, physical resemblance)'' and even various incarnations of Megatron.
* {{Fireballs}}: Had the ability to shoot these as both a Black Agumon and Dark Tyrannomon
* FireForgedFriends: With all the near death experiences coal has had with Sovrano this certainly qualifies
* FistOfRage: Whenever Coal gets furious, one can usually see his gauntleted hand clenching into a shaking fist before he starts taking out that anger on whoever caused it.
* GottaKillThemAll: Coal swore that he had to kill both Greymon and Gotsumon to deserve visiting Kunemon's grave.
* GracefulInTheirElement: Put Coal in an open battleground or anywhere where he needs to fight and he'll take to it like a duck to water. Social interactions, on the other hand...
* HadToBeSharp: Growing up in a place like the [[DeathWorld Digital World]], Coal didn't have the luxury of being weak. Having to fight every single day to simply survive and hunting for his own food to stave off starvation caused him to power up rather quickly just by necessity, although Coal himself was already one who wished to be strong so it wasn't like he was against getting stronger.
* HealingFactor: A side effect of obtaining the hazard shortly before his first death. With it coal can fight even after receiving wounds that would cripple or kill most other digimon.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:This has happened to Coal a surprising amount of times. Duskmon has stabbed him in this way a large number of times, Metalgreymon ended up impaling Coal with his own sword, and just before his death, Machinedramon knocked him back with an attack which ended with Coal getting impaled on some debris. Then in second life, he takes this Up To Eleven when he was impaled several times with rail-gun rods fired upon him from Ion's fortress, which he then proceeded to pull out of himself as if they were only a minor inconvenience. ]]
* ItsPersonal: Coal's hatred for Greymon and Gotsumon came from their killing Kunemon, his first friend, in front of his eyes.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While his personality isn't exactly what one would call pleasant, Coal cares quite a lot about his friends and family.
* KarmicDeath: Dishes it out to a self entitled Phelesmon who used one of his soldiers as a shield soon died by Coal's hand. Double deserved since after his last life he should have learned not to mess with Coal
* KlingonPromotion: [[spoiler: After Coal learned he had the potential to inherit the Code Key of Pride, he has made one of his main post-resurection goals is to grow strong enough to kill [[ArchEnemy Lucemon]] and take his place as the Demon Lord of Pride.]]

* LargeAndInCharge: Coal has been put in charge of small groups before, seeing as he's essentially Sovrano's righthand man, and he's around 10ft tall as a Knightmon, about twice as tall as your average human and towering over any Rookie.
* LifeOrLimbDecision: Strings, not fully believing Coal to be Coal due to the influence of Cherrymon, using his own special brand of logic, tells Coal to cut off his left arm to be prove he is his friend, otherwise he'll kill Coal for pretending to be Coal. Coal after thinking about the entire situation for a moment does so without any other hestitation. Downplayed in that Coal can regenerate limbs due to the Digital Hazard's healing factor.
* LikeADuckTakesToWater: Despite the fact that Coal didn't in any way want or enjoy being forced into the role of one of Sovrano's army, he's proven himself to be a rather critical resource when it comes down to wiping out threats, finding important items or [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking being a merchant.]]
* LizardFolk: As a Black Agumon and Dark Tyrannomon, he counted as this.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: With the likes of [[DeadpanSnarker Sovrano]], [[AlphaBitch his wife]] [[ClingyJealousGirl Rain]], [[LackOfEmpathy Ion]] and a cavalcade of other odd characters, Coal has definitely grown as a person from having to put up with them, even if he's still rather blunt and not very emotional most of the time.
* MadeOfIron: Coal just does not understand the concepts of "giving up" or "staying down".
* MightyGlacier: Coal can tank hits all day and hits like a runaway locomotive but, seeing as his speed is his DumpStat, he's nowhere near the fastest Digimon around.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: Just like any other Digimon, Coal's early life was nothing but hunting down food and fighting other Digimon, with not much changing since he's gotten older.
* MusclesAreMeaningful: Under that heavy, Chrome Digizoid armor of his, Coal looks like a character straight out of ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000''; absolutely rippling with muscle.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: It could be interpreted that Coal's desire to grow stronger is to protect the people important to him, so that they won't suffer the same fate as Kunemon has.
* OnlySaneMan: Coal despite being a functioning mute Coal is by far the most sane and stable of his companions.
* PaletteSwap: Back when he was a Black Agumon, he was one for his rival who was a regular Agumon at the time.
* PastimesProvePersonality: You wouldn't expect a guy like Coal to have any kind of remotely-silly hobby but he seems to have picked up one when it comes to collecting Digimon cards of all things.

* Reincarnation: Coal has went from being the [=BlackWarGreymon=] to the Knightmon coal caerleon to [=ChaosKnightmon=] the hazard personified.
* SelectiveSlaughter: Coal refuses to [[WouldNotHurtAChild kill Fresh or In-Training Digimon]], seeing as they're pretty much defenseless and the Digital equivalent of children.
* SilentSnarker: Considering the quirkiness of his friends, companions, family and now minions Coal is gradually becoming this.
* SpiderSense: Coal sometimes has a feeling urging him to move. This feeling is noticed to be activated every time Coal's loved ones are in danger.
* SuperStrength: As is the norm for Digimon in general, Coal is vastly stronger than any regular human could ever hope to be.
* TailSlap: That large tail he had as a Dark Tyrannomon wasn't just for show.
* TheDragon: Serves as one to sovrano the demon lord of gluttony and one of the few to know about the demon lords more secretive schemes
* TheLancer: Coal, given his role as Sovrano's right hand, and the one who is deferred to when decisions need to be made when Sovrano is not there or is not in a position to really call the shots.
* ThePatriarch: With his large, imposing figure, emotionless demeanor and stern attitude, Coal comes off as rather authoritative when it comes to his family. It helps that he's rather invested in his kids' lives and a rather intensive PapaWolf to boot.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: His loyalty towards his friends and family, and his willingness to do anything for them pushes Coal forward a lot.
* ThePowerOfHate: Of course on the flip-side, a lot of what else keeps Coal going, besides his friends and his family, is that fact he can not let go of his hatred towards those he feels that have severely wronged him or his friends and family.
* TheQuietOne: Coal hardly ever speaks more than six words at a time.
* TragicKeepsake: A band made of Alrauramon flowers that was given to Coal by Kunemon.
* UndyingLoyalty: Coal having spent most of his life alone is this way towards his friends He will go to any length to protect them or avenge them. It doesn't hurt that this is a species-wide trait for Knightmon in general either.

* ActionMom: Despite being the mother of thirteen (so far), Rain is one of the most powerful characters of the cast.
* ACupAngst: Played with. While she herself isn't really lacking in the bust department, Rain has shown some jealously towards [[spoiler: Lilithmon, the Demon Lord of Lust]]. This has largely been averted since thanks to various reasons, all of which have bolstered Rain's "size".
* ArchEnemy: She's this when it comes to Kazemon, as the two usually end up fighting each other whenever the opportunity arises. [[spoiler: She eventually wins and ends up crushing Kazemon to death, taking her data and ironically having her as her next child, Sakura.]]
* BalefulPolymorph: Was transformed into a giant blueberry filled with juice after eating an experimental piece of gum while in Toy Town. This transformation was quite literal in that she ended up gaining the Nature element through it and is now essentially a humanoid fruit.
* BalloonBelly: Usually has to deal with this whenever she's pregnant, such as when she was having [[spoiler: Ursula]], after eating a large meal ''(or a Digimon)'', when using her Acid Ink attack, or when she had swelled into a blueberry during her first trip to Toy Town...essentially more often than she would probably like given her somewhat comic relief status.
* BishounenLine: Parodied and Zig-Zagged, as she went from the ugly Hagurumon and Numemon to the bishounen-looking Ranamon, only to occasionally turn into the widely-considered {{Gonk}} Calmaramon.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Rain famous idol, loving wife, and mother of two has a surprising sadistic side and isn't afraid to show it when it comes to anyone she doesn't like.
* BreastExpansion: Thanks to Data Fusion, and the process of creating digi-milk, Rains "Rainclouds" have increased in size substantially to the point of Gag Boobs.
* CatFight: Just about every time she stumbles across Kazemon, this is likely to happen.
* ClockworkCreature: As a Hagurumon, she was basically made up entirely of gears.
* CuteMonsterGirl: As a Ranamon, she's a HalfHumanHybrid of a beautiful woman and a fairy-fish, something that doesn't detract from her looks at all. Could be averted depending on one's opinion of Calmaramon.
* DesignatedGirlFight: She's always the one who ends up fighting Kazemon whenever the opportunity arises, which is often seeing as they're on opposing sides.
* DontLookAtMe: Rain went through this phase when she Digivolved into the hideous slug Numemon.
* {{Fanservice}}: She's MsFanservice in her regular Ranamon form, both in universe and out of universe.
* FantasticFruitsAndVegetables: Is one now, as a Fruit-type Digimon, gaining the Nature typing and it effecting her data overall such that Rain is now essentially a humanoid blueberry such to the point she was labeled produce when trying to enter Factorial Town and was given a "Certified Fresh" sticker by the customs officers.
* FirstGirlWins: Rain is the first female Digimon Coal really interacted with and now she is his wife.
* FoodGod: Inbetween gaining a nature element having a industrial sized farm and providing the majority of the food in toy land the inhabitants have as coal calls it revering his wife as a 'fertile harvest goddess'.
* {{Gonk}}: Her Beast Spirit, Calmaramon, could be considered this, as her entire lower-half is that of a giant squid. Once she acquired this new form, it's telling that she lost a few of her fans.
* GreenEyedMonster: She can easily turn rather vicious when her jealousy rears its ugly head, usually around anyone she considers pretty getting close to Coal or Kazemon in general due to her looks.
* HollywoodAcid: She can spit this with her Acid Ink technique.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Coal is 3 meters (10 feet) tall while Rain as Ranamon is 1.5 (5 feet) meters tall.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Rain put up a haughty, arrogant face while in fact deep inside she has a deep [[BeneathTheMask insecurity]] about her look from her period as a Numemon. Being abandoned (with no ill reason) when she was a Hagurumon only [[HatesBeingAlone adds to her issues]].
* JaggedMouth: Naturally had one as a Hagurumon.
* LightningBruiser: Rain possesses high attack, defense, and an extreme amount of speed as Ranamon, being both able to shrug off most attacks if she doesn't first dodge them after hitting the enemy first.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Rain had a crush on Coal right from the beginning, thinking him "handsome". This may or may not be a result of her encountering a Black Agumon earlier on who defeated a Modoki Betamon, allowing Rain to not starve to death since she could then eat the meat it was protecting.
* MakingASplash: She can easily conjure rainstorms, massive blasts of water and has a rather [[JustForPun fluid]] control over water itself.
* MamaBear: She will maul whoever get between her and her children or her man.
* MindControl: Rain did this twice to the Digimon that inhabited the Domain she conquered.
* MindControlDevice: She still has the ability to make these in the form of Dark Gears, a holdover from her Hagurumon days.
* MotherOfAThousandYoung: While nowhere near this many with Rain's desire to be a mother and Coal immense fondness for their ''training'' (Data Fusion) this will one day be a realty. She and Coal have a deal presently where she can have as many as she wants but only ''after'' they rise to the top and kill the threats to their family. For now thirteen will have to do.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: She has legs in her default form but her lower half becomes that of a giant squid when she turns into Calmaramon.
* PregnantBadass: Despite the massive stat drawbacks of generating new digital life, Rain ''still'' is much stronger than normal Digimon of her tier during the process. This is somewhat less the case in more recent pregnancies where due to various causes she is so round that she cannot likely/easily defend herself, in the process making Coal quite protective of her.
* SouthernBelle: Oddly enough, she has this kind of accent.
* SpinAttack / ThisIsADrill: Has one of these as Calmaramon known as the Titanic Charge. She couldn't use it at first due to getting dizzy but she eventually masters it through a lot of training.
* SupremeChef: As someone who regularly cooks for the the whole family Rain has gotten quite good cooking. This however come with a downside as her husband Coal notes other food doest compare after eating rain's home cooking for such a long time. She was once able to make food so good no one noticed the food had been intentional poisoned.
* SuperSpit: She has this as Calmaramon with her Acid Ink technique.
* ThroughHisStomach: One of the many ways rain has made Coal love her deeply is her home cooking.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: Rain as Calmaramon towers over Coal as Knightmon.
* TheDitz: As Hagurumon Rain was as dumb as a brick. She's gotten better, especially as Calmaramon, which trades her speed as Ranamon for intelligence and power. Has moments of it still however even after overall increasing her intelligence, since she prefers not having to think about too many things.
* ThroughHisStomach: Rain helped win Coal's affection by [[FoodAsBribe cooking and offering him food]].
* WitchWithACapitalB: Gets called this by Arukenimon, although it's more of a compliment than an insult.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Thoroughly subverted, for as soon as everyone is made aware of the initial drawbacks of her new form in Calmaramon, namely a loss in speed, she went through quite a lot of training to iron out the kinks until she could use her new form to its utmost potential.

A Digimon Coal met after his first battle with Agumon, he is annoying and a nuisance, but very durable and basically impossible for Coal to get rid of, so Coal decided to instead befriend him and make an ally of his. He hasn't explained where he is from, but he doesn't come from Native Forest, and seems to hail from somewhere where Digimon are far more powerful than in Native Forest, if his own abilities are any indication. He's extremely weak, but he can take quite a lot of punishment before going down and he has a [[{{Determinator}}fighting spirit to match it.]] This indomitable will has given you a sense that perhaps you are kindred spirits, even if his [[DeadpanSnarker attitude]] is grating.

* TimeTravel: Is hoping to one day be able to perform this to prevent the tragedy that befell him and his partner. So far he can stop, slow, or hasten time but actual reversal has escaped his grasp and he does not seem to believe that this will ever change.
* TranquilFury: His usual nature such as when he finally killed Gabumon, the remaining half of Omnimon.
* {{Troll}}: He has a habit of saying things that get a reaction out of people like when he looked under the skirt of Ophanimon and commented on her panties.

* AchillesHeel: Inherited from his father, Smoke's use of the Sleipnir armor set leaves him vulnerable as its cumbersome nature allows certain counterattacks to penetrate it. While the armor itself is thick and strong its sheer weight and the momentum it carries would allow someone who is accurate enough to hit its joints and thinner segments to pick apart the armor the way Duskmon did to Coal, though it would require that they be A) strong enough to still get through it, B) precise enough in their hits to land the critical strikes regularly, and C) fast enough to avoid any return attack since the Sleipnir armor also boosts its users' offensive capabilities. In terms of game mechanics, this is demonstrated by having increased Attack and Defense, but an increased chance of opponents landing critical strikes if their accuracy is high enough.
* ActingUnnatural: As Smoke is internally a shy, kind person, he is almost always acting unnatural in one way or another be it playing the role of soldier or being a pretty-boy fop to disguise his true motives and feelings.
* ActionDuo: Often with either his friend Char or either of his bodyguards, Suzuka and Ein.
* ADayInTheLimelight: His Omakes, which tend to focus on his friendship with others.

* AFatherToHisMen: More like "Brother", but he treats his own forces like family and cares deeply for them, to the point that them being hurt weighs heavily on him and that he prioritizes their recovery after battles more than his own.
* AffablyEvil: For those that would consider him evil for working on the Demon Lord's side, he still is a nice, loyal Digimon who honestly is trying to improve the world all the while being kind to those he meets...so long as it is not on the battlefield, but even there he is willing to display mercy and kindness so long as it is possible.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Does this to the much shorter Suzuka as a way of showing his affection for his subordinate, but also does it towards his younger family members to show his love for them too.
* AffectionateNickname: His actual name "Smoke" could be considered this now, as only those who really know him call him it since to the outside world he is known as Lyon due to Daemon's influence and meddling.
* AFriendInNeed: Like his father, Lyon prioritizes his friends almost everything else, leaving him prone to acts like this. Be it the time he nearly died to save Ein from Terriermon, sticking up for Ein when he was captured by his former squad, or other such moments, Lyon will always do what he can for his friends which has led to them possessing a deep loyalty towards him in return.
* AHeroIsBorn: He is born a few hundred pages into the story, at which point his own heroic arc and journey begins while the original story continues...the only problem is that this particular "hero" was born on the villain's side of the story, meaning that instead of being a typical hero he is more along the lines of an Anti-Hero who is fixing the badguys from within.
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Like most of his family, Smoke is on the side of what would be considered the villains of the setting, but at the same time is a genuinely good person and personally dislikes all the violence and combat going around.
* AllLovingHero: Wants to be this, but the Digital World's messed-up state keeps it from becoming a complete reality.
* AlwaysSecondBest: Similar to his father's situation with his own rival, Lyon has felt this way when compared to Marcus and Gaia Two, since he has lost his fights with them despite being personally stronger than his direct rival (Gaia Two). That it takes a Human to offset the difference doesn't fix the issues to his pride, as having a Human help beat you up in battles doesn't lessen the sensation of losing.
* AmazonChaser: He is completely in love with his bodyguard, Suzuka, who is both powerful and quite martial in her mannerisms. Despite this however it is implied that he is seeking a partner who will be like his mother, so while Lyon is attracted to Suzuka's strength he is not solely drawn by it and it is simply a bonus.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Given his humanoid features even while a Centarumon and his elder sister's ability to transform into a Humanoid form, it is entirely possible that Lyon is in fact part Human given that his (alleged) grandparents Arukenimon and Mummymon were created from a Human's data. The fact that Lyon doesn't tend to *like* Humans given his experiences with them and how they are fighting against him all the time makes this possibly a case of deep-seated Irony he is either unaware of or ignores.
* AndThisIsFor: Wishes to help Ein avenge Hail, his former superior officer and mentor who was slain by Marcus and Gaia Two when they misinterpreted his peace offering.
* AnIcePerson: With his ability to use water and ice techniques this is a part of his arsenal, and though he favors fighting with his weapons he has been shown to mix ice in with them such as during the battle with Myotismon.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Or at least considered as such by his more serious and stern twin sister Sakura, who loves her little brother but finds his easy-going exterior irritating. This is perhaps a result of Smoke acting like how Sakura naturally is while she in turn is trying to be like how he truly is, shy and withdrawn, so seeing him engage in the behavior she is refraining from is difficult.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Tends to handle his work like this in the Inspection Bureau, finding out the crimes of Digimon within the Demon Lord forces and then forcing them to play nice and come quietly to be prosecuted unless they wish to face the business end of his spear.
* AntiArmor: Both of his spears the Gungnir and the Destroyer Lance accomplish this in different ways. For the Gungnir it can pierce through things with its sharp tip, while the Destroyer Lance is so large and carries with it such concussive force that it can bluntly crush armor it strikes.
* AntiHero: What he is for the most part, being a Hero born on the side of the villains but who is still trying to make the world a better place...all the while fighting against the typical heroes and "good guys" of the setting so that he can accomplish said goals.
* AntiVillain: What he could be argued to be when he is actually fighting on behalf of the Demon Lords rather than just cleaning up their armies, though he does this to protect his family and friends rather than out of outright malice for his foes.
* ApologeticAttacker: Since he does not actually wish to hurt people this is his way of fighting, but if someone has actually earned his ire and wrath he drops it to punish them and protect those around him.
* ArchEnemy: To Marcus and Gaia Two. Their introduction was assaulting Lyon when they presumed he was attacking a group of innocent Goblimon (actually members of Ogremon's gang who were attacking an innocent who Lyon was defending), and they have come to blows multiple times since then as well, mirroring the rivalry of their parents. In a reversal of their parents' situation however is that since Gaia Two is a near exact clone of his father he is just as strong as him naturally...but Lyon is an improvement of Coal thanks to the Data Fusion process giving him Coal's and Rain's strengths, meaning that in this generation it is the Caerleon side which is actually stronger rather than always second best. The inclusion of Marcus however somewhat mitigates this however as they team up against Lyon and even Biomerge to power up, giving them an edge in spite of his natural talent and hard work.
* ARealManIsAKiller: Believes this, though struggles with the ramifications of it since he is not born for killing. He even keeps a journal of everyone he has harmed as if to keep a record of his self-perceived guilt.
* ArmCannon: [[spoiler: Now that he's a Centarumon, his right arm has transformed into an odd-looking cannon that can shoot lasers at high speeds.]]
* ArtifactAlias: Arguable case with his names Smoke and Lyon.
* AtLeastIAdmitIt: His main issue with the Light, inherited from his father's perspective, is that they proclaim to be these amazing good-guys who are fighting evil when in fact they do many of the same horrible things they accuse others of such as murder, killing, and the like. He knows and hates that he causes others harm, but he is willing to at least accept that in that regard he and the Light are no better than the other, and hates them for seeing things in such a black and white manner.
* AttackHello: His introduction at the Battle of Chrome Mine where he smashed his spear into Asuramon to knock the Digimon back.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: High ranking member of the Demon Lord forces? Check. Kicks copious amounts of ass when on the battlefield? Check.
* AvengingTheVillain: While not really a "villain" perhaps, Hail was still working for Leviamon and the Demon Lord armies yet Smoke wishes to avenge him for Ein's sake.
* AwesomeEgo: Prideful like his father, but also can back it up like Coal can. Given his inferiority complex, the fact that he still is prideful at all should demonstrate just how good he can be when compared to the competition, since while he may think he isn't as good as Sakura or Franziska, he still is one of the most powerful Digimon around thanks to all of his training.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: A key part to his work as an investigator, but also plays a part in his skill in combat.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: While he and Sakura bicker a lot, it is obvious that the twins love one another dearly and most of their teasing and arguments comes from love rather than anything negative.
* BabiesEverAfter: This is Lyon's goal with Suzuka, modeled after his own parent's relationship.
* BackToBackBadasses: Given that he is often being protected by either Suzuka or Ein, or is protecting Char himself, this is essentially the method by which he is always engaged in combat.
* BadassAdorable: Cute as a button and abnormally strong, just like all of Coal and Rain's children.
* BadassNormal: Of his siblings the only abnormal thing about Smoke is that he was born with a pseudo Crest of Hope thanks to being born as a twin to someone with a Crest of their own...but since this pseudo Crest holds no power Smoke is a normal Digimon born of Data Fusion. No partner like Reycom, he isn't a Legendary Warrior like his older sisters Meru and Sakura, and he was not able to just surge forth and reach Mega fast like Franziska had. Overall the only thing he's got going for him is being a Data Fusion Digimon which is not really unique anymore in the Digital World, giving him plenty of competition, yet he keeps ahead of it and kicks ass thanks to his dedicated training each and every day.
* BadassTeacher: Gets two of them in the form of Coal and [[spoiler: Mummymon.]]
* BandOfBrothers: Lyon, Char, Suzuka, and Ein, have been through life and death situations and have become close as they can be as a result. The group spends almost all of their time together, and each of them would die to protect the others. The result is a group of Bash Brothers who are one of the most powerful individual forces in the Digital World.
* BearHug: As Ursula can attest, he likes to give these to his family.
* BeautifulAllAlong: While he was a variety of small monsters prior to becoming a Champion, afterwards he became humanoid and thus adopted his mother's looks she too gained as a Champion (at least, as Ranamon). Since Rain was the Digital World's most beautiful woman (given that she killed her rival for the title, and Lilithmon doesn't bother to compete) this means that Lyon went from a small dinosaur to a Bishonen man.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: A pretty-boy through and through, and also one of the nicest members of the Caerleons even when stacked up against Meru, Ursula, and Blue-Two.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: On the receiving end of this from Ein, who had lost his other recipient of it only to have his life saved by Lyon. For his part Lyon respects and values the treatment, but also is troubled by how his friend (just like Suzuka) would die for him if need be since Lyon would do the same for him.
* BeingEvilSucks: Dislikes being born on the side of the villains, but does his duty to make the world a better place from within his own organization. This has left him as the villain to what would normally be the protagonists of a Digimon show such as Marcus, but he still is undeniably good...just on the wrong team and fixing the world in a different way than them.
* BeingPersonalIsntProfessional: Treats this like a Yo-Yo, both treating his subordinates like his own family and showing them kindness while also refusing to be in a relationship with one of them (Suzuka) despite their shared affection since he knows that it would be an abuse of his position of power above her. This has not however kept him from creating a workaround in the form of having Suzuka form her own group, so he will no longer be her direct boss and can romance her like anyone else.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between him and Suzuka, to the extreme. It is to the point that their training sessions are implied to be a turn-on for him as well as Suzuka, not that Suzuka is at all aware of this.
* BenevolentBoss: Treating his forces like friends and family while never abusing them the way a high ranking member of the Demon Lords can be expected to, Lyon earns this label and more.
* BerserkButton: Betrayal and the harming of innocents, especially when mixed as shown by how he fought an entire force of allies who were raiding a small village while simultaneously preparing to kill Ein as a scapegoat. That they would hurt Digimon who did nothing wrong to them while also betraying their ally who they previously had bullied earned the group a battle so brutal and lopsided that Lyon did not even require the aid of Sakura or Char. Simply put, do *not* make the normally gentle and kind Digimon fight you because if things come to that he will end you.
* BestFriend: A few, but in order of closeness they go Char (who he brought into the family), Lloyd (one of his first friends, though put on hold given Lloyd's disappearance), and Ein. Suzuka could count, though his love for her overshadows this trope.
* BestFriendsInLaw: Given that his friends are all marrying his sisters (Char/Ursula, Lloyd/Meru, and Ein/Franziska), Lyon will be in-laws with all of his best friends. This perhaps is no accident given that Rain, Coal, and Lyon himself all are shippers they actively pursued such outcomes.
* BestHerToBedHer: His agreement with Suzuka is that he can take her out to dinner if he bests her in the majority of a day's training sessions, but so far has been unable thanks to her headstart on him and how determined Suzuka is to remain better than her charge so she can feel comfortable protecting him. This being the case, he has almost caught up and it is only a matter of time until he actually manages to pull it off. Throughout all of this though Suzuka has no idea, thinking that the deal is not special since they *normally* have dinner together...missing of course that this time dinner would just be them, not their entire team and/or their families too.
* BetaCouple: When Sovrano and Inari are not fulfilling this role he is filling this in with Suzuka, since while they are not together it is obvious to everyone that they sort of already are.
* BetterLivingThroughEvil: Lyon is a Blue Blood and lives quite the rich lifestyle thanks to the bodies his family has climbed over to reach there, a farcry to how his father grew up, and far better than the (relatively) meager living most of their foes in the Light live. Lyon enjoys the benefits, though is sickened by his own part in the whole 'Evil' side of things and those he harms.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Friendly to a fault, trusting, and not a fan of causing others harm unless he has to...but if he has to? Run. Crosses with Beware The Silly Ones, as Lyon gives off a foppish persona to the outside world but when push comes to shove can be a cold, serious Digimon like his father. His heart is kind, and so is the way he acts, which is why when he's pushed to act otherwise it is a big deal.
* BFS: As a [=ChaosKnightmon=] he possesses one in the form of Gram, which he uses when his spears are not optimal for the situation. While not possessing the raw power of the Destroyer Lance or the piercing capabilities of the Gungnir, it still is a giant sword and carries with it massive power as well thanks to how it towers over most Digimon.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Threaten his family and he will kill you, dropping the nice-guy persona if it means protecting those he cares about.
* BigBrotherMentor: Taught Ursula how to shoot a gun the way Mummymon taught him, and overall hangs out with and teaches his younger siblings when he can.
* BigBrotherWorship: He seems to really look up to all of his siblings, Reycom included.
* BigDamnHeroes: At Chrome Mine his entrance was marked with bashing Asuramon away, Sakura coming as well. This saved Coal from having to fight through even more foes to reach the Digital Hazard, and perhaps bought him the time he needed to save Sovrano and everyone in the end.
* BigEater: His entire bag was filled with bread when he went to Freezeland thanks to Rain, who knew how much her son loved her cooking.
* {{Bishonen}}: As an expy of the character credited with really starting the Bishonen trend as well as the in-universe son of the world's most beautiful woman and a handsome if rugged man, Lyon ended up as this and it shows given the fans he earned from it.
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: He defies this and hates those who submit to it, seeing them as close-minded and unable to actually understand the issues of the world.
* BlackbeadEyes: Inverted as a Botamon, his entire body except his eyes were black.
* BloodKnight: Subverted. While he does wish to fight, it is because he has a need to prove himself and live up to his father's legacy rather than out of actual bloodlust. In fact he dislikes having to fight and regrets it, to the point of an unhealthy obsession where he keeps track of those he has caused harm to. He will fight, but only because he feels he has to either to protect those he loves or to gather the prestige he needs to change the world.
* BlueBlood: Of his family he best personifies this, taking Rain's ability to be refined and prestigious when he wishes and demonstrating it far more often than his (often-times silly) mother does.
* BodyguardingABadass: On both the giving and receiving end of this, as normally he is being protected by Suzuka and Ein despite being powerful himself, while other times as Char's subordinate he is the one doing the protecting of a wholly capable Digimon.
* BoisterousBruiser: His tendency to talk and be grandiose in battle has been noted in battle, often times speaking far more than anyone else in the story. Despite this he still kicks ass, though all the talking and grandstanding may get in the way a little bit.
* BoringButPractical: Of all his siblings he is the most well-rounded when it comes to fighting capabilities, being tough, fast, and powerful, but not the best at any one of these areas in terms of overall potential. He can fight at ranged with what he learned from Mummymon, but also can fight in melee combat thanks to his training with Coal. He is not the best at any one thing, but he is at least proficient at everything, with heavy training pushing things above basic proficiency and into Ace category.
* BrainlessBeauty: He appears to be this to many Digimon, though it is a ruse to mask his true intentions of one day overthrowing Lucemon. Who would expect the worst from a simple foppish pretty-boy?

* BrokenAce: Good at various things thanks to all of his training? Check. Loved by his family? Check. A rising star in the Demon Lord armies? Check. * BroodingBoyGentleGirl: While he puts on a happy face, beneath the surface the experiences Lyon has gone through have left him quite brooding in overall personality while the woman he loves, Suzuka, is far simpler and pure in his view. He may be burdened by the harm he causes, but Suzuka is there to support him and show him kindness the same as she always has without reservation.
* BrotherSisterTeam: When he is with Sakura he can pull this off, such as the battle against Asuramon where the two tag-teamed him to hold off the far older Digimon.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: He's remarkably strong for his age but, despite the DeathWorld he lives in where MightMakesRight, he possesses a rather gentle demeanor.
* BrutalHonesty: Receives this from Suzuka, and gives it to Sakura since his twin tends to not be as upfront with her feelings.
* BuxomIsBetter: He has been attracted to Suzuka since he was a Rookie, particularly her chest and hips/thighs, and is amused by how his friend Ein thinks this concerning Franziska. Despite no doubt learning the 'benefits' of a bountiful chest from Rain, whose focus on beauty is par none, Smoke perhaps leans more towards Suzuka's bottom-heavy build thanks to growing up in love with her.
* CallingYourAttacks: Given his propensity for talking while fighting, he is a bit more prone to this than most Digimon, though many also at least call their most powerful techniques.
* CantCatchUp: An odd variant with his rivals, Gaia (Two) and Marcus. While he can beat either of them in a fight, the fact that the two are partners who fight side by side in battle means that Lyon is forced to always compete with the sum total of their growths rather than just one or the other. If it was just one of them he would have been ahead of them all along.
* CardGames: Like his family he can play the Digimon Card Game.
* CatchPhrase: He has a few commonly repeated phrases, be it mentioning how he is going to tear out someone's tongue or how he is going to make them suffer a thousand deaths. The first is in reference to his Roy Mustang allusions, while the second is to his Gundam allusions, where it was a common statement of purple haired pretty boy Tieria Erde.
* CavalierCompetitor: Until his wrath is invoked, he tends to be this sort of combatant since he doesn't have any real ill will for his foes. If his rage does come down upon them though this can be expected to vanish and for him to end the battle as decisively as possible.
* CentralTheme: Pride and Revenge. Like his father before him he has plenty of the former and it helps drive his actions, while his desire to help his friend Ein obtain vengeance and his personal tendency to mete out punishment to those he feels warrant it have him follow in his father's footsteps for the latter as well. Given his status as a second generation of Coal, Lyon and his father carry the lion's share of the story's themes given Coal's protagonist status and Lyon's Hero of Another Story status.
* ChallengeSeeker: Deliberately seeks out trials and tribulations he can use to boost his status and renown to match that of his father.
* ChaoticGood: He would be Lawful Good if he was born on the other side of the war, but since he was stuck with the 'bad guys' he is forced to be this instead of Lawful Good since it forces him to compromise on some things for a greater good.
* CharacterDevelopment: Like his twin sister Sakura, he has possessed a great deal of this following the encounter with Myotismon. In Lyon's case, he went from a gentle and sweet child to a pseudo-playboy whose outgoing nature is a smokescreen for his deep-seated unhappiness and insecurities. He still is a loving, caring friend to those around him and is still as sweet to his family as ever, but the once happy child has become quite the self-condemning and criticizing adult who struggles to keep his optimism above the darkness of the world around him.

This then allowed Lyon to break free of Myotismon's nightmare technique when the gift Daemon gave Lyon turned out to be his own Crest, all helping turn the tide against Myotismon in the end. Afterwards Lyon returned the Crest to Daemon however, preventing it from making a reprise appearance without changing hands again.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He has known Suzuka since literally the day he was born thanks to her being present when he was born, and when she later saved his life and became his bodyguard he came to love her. The feelings are mutual even though progress is slow, so the two qualify.
* ChildhoodFriends: Char, Ein, Suzuka, a good deal of the people Lyon surrounds himself with are his friends forged during his childhood.
* ClassicalAntihero: Plagued by his self-doubt, Lyon qualifies since he sees the talented Digimon all around him and laments being unable to accomplish the same feats as them. Despite this he trains and does his best to overcome his relative weakness to his family members, and as such is quite the force to be reckoned with in spite of his insecurities.

* CodeOfHonour: Learned from his father, he possesses the basic code Coal has and has added on some standards to it since instead of the Neutral aligned Coal he is Good and so is less tolerant of cheating and other cheap tactics than even Coal is.
* CombatPragmatist: While he is not in favor of cheating or the like, Lyon's fighting style is a mirror of his father's own which means he is willing to weave in things like headbutts and other ways to fight 'fair' but all-out at the same time.

* CreateYourOwnVillain: If Marcus and Gaia (Two) had not assaulted him on various occasions it is quite likely he would hold no ill will towards the pair, but instead he desires to defeat them both for his own pride and also to help his friend Ein achieve his own revenge.

* CriticalHit: His Sleipnir armor is vulnerable to these, but shrugs off most normal attacks which means that unless someone gets a Critical Hit on him (which they may receive a bonus for from the armor) Lyon will be able to weather most attacks thrown his way unscathed, which when tied into his toughness in terms of HP and Defense mean that he is a tank just like his father, albeit a more well-rounded one.

Of course when faced with Digimon around his own level he can't, but since most Digimon are beneath the standard power level of the Caerleon family it happens more often than it doesn't in his job.

* DesperatelyCravesAffection: Like many of his siblings, having one parent who displays an excess of emotion and another who displays nearly none has resulted in Lyon desiring his father's approval and affection while never feeling like he is good enough.
* Determinator: Inherited from his father, nothing will keep Lyon down when he is in a fight, especially not when his friends or family are on the line.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Directly assaulted the near eldritch abomination known as Myotismon after breaking free of his mental torment, impaling him through the eye.

This is aided of course by his training regimen which as to be expected of his family is quite severe, but grants him great power as a result and thus means that this 'normal' Data Fusion Digimon is among the strongest of them.

* EquipmentUpgrade: How he manages to keep up with the insane power boosts his competitors get. While simple, it works, and he has come to be quite the powerful Digimon with and without it.

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Given his status as The Heart (somewhat shared with Meru and Ursula) among his family, Smoke is both loved by those around him and in turn loves others. All while being a 'villain' who is actually trying to save the world in his own way.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Again, for a certain definition of 'evil', but Smoke fights with as much honor as he can on the battlefield and is disgusted by others like Etemon who eschew such attitudes.

Despite both being capable and well-liked by others they suffer from a need to prove themselves to live up to their family image, being both prideful as well as insecure.

Of course, the fact that she's unbelievably strong for a Champion-level Digimon, let alone the Rookie which she is must be taken into consideration as well.
* NonIndicativeName: The Japanese name for "Diamond Storm" is even called "Fox Leaf Arrowheads".
* PetalPower: Her "Diamond Storm" technique is actually made up of sharpened leaves, not diamonds.
* PreciousPuppies: It's more a case of precious foxes, especially with her earlier In-Training form of Viximon.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Takes the latter role in comparison to her partner in Reycom who really doesn't visually react much or is particularly emotive.

* CuteKitten: Curran, as a Nyaromon, was essentially an adorable-looking cat. Even her digivolution into Sistermon Noir, while making her human, still has traces of her time as a Nyaromon due to the cat hoodie she's constantly wearing.
* CutenessProximity: She has this effect on just about everyone she runs into, as even Coal can't help but gently cradle and cuddle his niece if she starts getting affectionate.
* FunSize: She definitely qualified as this when she was the basketball-sized Snow Botamon and Nyaromon, although her digivolution into Sistermon Noir has made her larger then most Rookie-level Digimon due to her now being the size of a teenage human.
* GunsAkimbo: Due to her digivolution, she now constantly carries around two revolver-looking guns that are her main method of defending herself.
* KillItWithIce: This was essentially Curran's only method of defending herself as a Snow Botamon, although she's since outgrown this once she digivolved into Nyaromon.
* LittleMissBadass: She's the daughter of Sovrano, the future Demon Lord of Gluttony, and Inari, a high-end Ultimate, meaning she's going to be outrageously-strong at any stage of her development. It doesn't hurt that she looks rather cute and innocent as Sistermon Noir despite the fact that she can easily trounce other Rookies and, with a bit of training, probably Champion-level Digimon as well just like her siblings.
