* BetterTheDevilYouKnow: Asha and she seem to be... accommodating... each other using this reasoning. When it comes to picking devils to work with, Bear Island knows the Ironborn. R'hllor is a whole new barrel of burny-death.

* OddFriendship: She's not about to start ''liking'' Asha thanks to her being a hated Ironborn, who have a long history of raiding Bear Island. Yet, at the same time, the two women do seem to be forming ''some'' form of bond during their interaction. Even if it's simply a case of the impromptu formation of "The Action Girls' Anti-Red God Insanity League" combining with shared cultural understanding. [[spoiler: Asha picks up a ''surprisingly'' intimate amount of knowledge about Northern religious practices and traditional mores all of a sudden when it comes to trying to convince Stannis to move the encampment to execute her brother honourably by the sword, rather than by burning. It doesn't take much to work out where the finer details of ''that'' probably came from, for all Asha probably wasn't a total ignoramus going in.]]

* AncestralWeapon: One of the few houses to have one; they have a bastard sword named Longclaw currently in Jeor Mormont's possession. [[spoiler:He passes it on to Jon Snow.]]
* AnimalMotifs: Bears -- Jeor is called the "Old Bear" and Alysane the "She-Bear." Dany also refers to Jorah as her bear several times. You'll also find jokes about skinchanging into and/or mating with bears both used by and against the family. They actively play on the MamaBear trope as a cultural anchor: on the gate of House Mormont's keep is an old carving of a bearskin-clad woman with a suckling baby cradled in one arm and a battleaxe held ready in her free hand. The message of ''that'' couldn't be clearer.

Legend states that King Rodrik Stark won Bear Island after he defeated the then Ironborn ruler at the time in a wrestling match, then awarding the lordship to the Mormonts. Previously, Bear Island had been ruled by the Woodfoots, who had been exterminated by the Ironborn. It's not known whether the Mormonts are originally from Bear Island in the first place or whether they coexisted with the Woodfoots at the island.
