It can be taken to represent either a Cross of St. George (a symbol commonly associated with the country and Church of England) or a saltire, in particular the Saltire of St. Patrick (which in turn is associated with the predominantly Catholic country/territory of Ireland). Curiously enough, he wore the same shirt when the Amakusas were still considered an independent Roman-Catholic offshoot.
