* After the UsefulNotes/{{Chernobyl}} nuclear power plant had its incident, the scientists working on site realized that it could go even worse if Reactor #4's molten core fell into the water tanks below, as the radioactive steam explosion would end up killing ''millions'' of people. Boris Baranov, Alexei Ananenko, and Valery Bezpalov volunteered to go in and drain the tanks, being forced to do it in ''total darkness'' when their only flashlight died on them because of the radiation. Not only did they save the day, they survived what was a clear SuicideMission.

* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4As0e4de-rI The opening ceremony]] of the 2012 London Olympics featured a celebration of British children's literature with the staff and patients of the Greater Ormond Street Hospital. As the children try to go to sleep, they're attacked by an group of villains from those stories, including [[Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland The Queen of Hearts]], [[Literature/ChittyChittyBangBang the Child Catcher and his minions]], [[Literature/PeterPan Captain Hook]], [[Literature/TheHundredAndOneDalmatians Cruella de Vil]], and--scariest of all--a towering [[Franchise/HarryPotter Voldemort]]. Just when all hope seems lost, though, who should come to the rescue but an ''army'' of the most powerful children's literature character of all: [[Literature/MaryPoppins Mary Poppins herself!]] The Mary Poppinses descend on umbrellas, charge the villains, and scare them off, saving the children to much delight.

* To quote the news article that was doing the rounds in 2009: You’re a 19-year-old kid. You’re critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 – 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you’re not getting out. Your family is halfway around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you’ll never see them again. As the world starts to FadeIn and [[FadeOut out]], you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an unarmed Huey, but it doesn’t seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Captain Ed Freeman (United States Army) is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back... 13 more times... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out."
