* AuthorityInNameOnly: Yurika's role as captain is ''intended'' to be this, as Ruri explains to her when she asks what makes a good modern captain. She averts it, though, to the point that Nergal eventually tries to replace her due to concerns over her pro-peace sentiments.

** Almost all of the displays on the Nadesico contain them, probably because the ship's computer, Omoikane, is itself a BunnyEarsLawyer. Highlights include the apologetic "you are out of bullets! Sorry!" on the Aestivalis' display, or the emoticons used as bullet points on one of the damage reports.

Added DiffLines:

** When Ruri is asking the ship to display a history of warfare, its summary of the Lunar war mentions [[spoiler:that the section of the Lunar government that was forced out and fled into space was the far right, explaining the rigidly militaristic and traditionalist nature of the Jovans, a well as their regressive views on gender roles.]]

* RealRobot: The Aestivalis are pretty powerful, but they're just a small portion of the overall military, and they're smaller than most mecha.

Some of the characters ''think'' they're in a SuperRobot anime; unfortunately for them, they're wrong, and RealityEnsues. Lampshaded by Ruri in one of the episode lead-ins, where she says "I thought this was supposed to be a real robot anime?"

** And in episode 16, everyone aboard the Nadesico learns [[spoiler: that the Jovians are in fact humans from the Moon who were banished by Earth for attempting insurrection and trying to break free from Earth's control. Many are upset due to this revelation, when they signed up because they thought the Jovians really were hostile aliens.]]

* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: [[spoiler: The main motivation behind why the Jovians are attacking. To be more precise, the Jovians were descendents of colonists from the Moon a hundred years prior to the start of the series. From the Jovian perspective, their people just wanted to be autonomous from the Earth government, but were defeated during an uprising and banished. They first fled to Mars, but then Earth sent several nukes onto their colonies there, forcing them to go even further, first towards the asteroid fields, then Jupiter where they found an factory capable of making lots of robots. And since then, they've been plotting their revenge against Earth's atrocities.]]
