When the spider Elder Bairn attacks the school, instead of running away when they spot the Elder Bairn, or even when Saya is fighting it and tells them to do exactly that, they mostly stay where they are, even after watching some of their classmates being slaughtered by the Elder Bairn. Even if Saya wasn't a FailureHeroine, it's hard to keep people this catastrophically stupid alive in this situation.
*** A single student averts this, as he tries to run away from the school, but he's unlucky enough to be hit by shards of glass in his neck and die from the blood loss.

* DaylightHorror: Elder Bairn's attacks become more daring as the series goes on, up to [[spoiler:[[WhamEpisode Episode 6]] when instead of being hunted by Saya outside the town, one of them shows up as she goes to school and [[AnyoneCanDie Motoe twins]] (or their doubles) die before Elder is killed. In Episode 9 almost the entire school is exterminated in broad daylight and by the end of the series the entire town.]]

* DangledByAGiant: A unique variant also notably featuring a non-humanoid as the giant. When an Elder Barin attempts to eat Kanako it uses its fingers to pin her arms behind her back and carries her this way as it lowers her into its mouth while she kicks desperately.
Another non-humanoid example occurs when an Elder Bairn resembling a cross between a tree frog and a jumping spider attacks Saya's school. During the attack it picks up a female student and holds her with the tips of its claws as it drops her into its mouth and devours her. What stands out in this instance is that it has its "fingertips" pinching either side of her midsection, so she dangles horizontally rather than the usual vertical position.

Sure enough, they all turned out to be {{Red Shirt}}s and Fumito sets Elder Bairns loose and [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness kills the entire town when the experiment is over]]. Furthermore, when Fumito explains the real plan, Motoe twins and Shinichiro bluntly reject it and to their surprise are quickly KilledOffForReal, while Yuka, who doesn't raise an objection, gets to leave alive]].

** Episodes 10 and 11 reveals the biggest one yet. [[spoiler: Saya [[TomatoSurprise is revealed to be]] in the middle of a FakeTown experiment the whole time. All of her so-called 'classmates' and townsfolk are revealed to be actors who were all paid to play along with a social-experiment on a drugged and amnesiac Saya. Kanako, Tokizane, and the Motoe twins, turned out to be alive, only to reveal the truth to Saya now because they've grown impatient with reaching the end of their contract and [[OnlyInItForTheMoney really wanting to collect their pay right now and leave]], all while not giving a damn about Saya's utter shock. Then Fumito reveals himself to be EvilAllAlong and behind the whole thing, and proceeds turn Elder Bairns against the actors beside Yuka who's sided with him when he gave a chance.]]

Episode 7 stands out as the Elder Bairn acts like he's met Saya before and he seems to know a lot about the actual plot of the series. Saya kills him rather than interrogate him, but moments like this one put the whole series in a new light once you know about the twist.]]

A rather dense protagonist with supernatural abilities? Check. An antagonist that puts him in an experiment to test if he will change or stay the same? Check. Said experiment being formulated exactly in terms of "a reward for the winner and a punishment for the loser"? Check. The protagonist's unusual background being related to the U.S. military in Japan? Check. Exposition given cryptically by the antagonist to the protagonist in a dimly lit study? Check. A character that speaks telepathically through a dog? Check. Blood and gore as a motif and/or delivered by the main character? Hell check.
** The OpeningNarration of episode 1 shows Saya slashing an Elder Bairn resembling a Chiropteran from ''Anime/BloodTheLastVampire''.
