The Jerf: I also thought Wesley's long, drawn-out discussion was a play for time, so he could recover that much more (and with that much more motivation), but it seems like that'd have been mentioned. Am I the only one? It's not the threats, it's how long it took to make them.

The original "to the pain" speech seems like it was more a case of Talking Your Way Out. The Cyclops example in particular appears to be exactly the same trope. —Document N

wia: I'd have thought the speech to be more a relic of his time as a pirate/Dread Pirate Roberts then of his torture at the hands of the Count. After all, he all but admitted a large part of Roberts' continuing success was merely a bluff whilst in the fire swamp. Oh, and Document N is probably right about the speech itself - Westley knew he had limited time (Miracle Max quotes him one hour of activity after taking the pill, but he only had 45 mins), so playing for time would have been an exceedingly foolish move.

  • Red Wren: I watched the movie last night. He said Westley shouldn't go swimming for an hour.
