Did Murder, She Wrote ever use this technique? It goes back at least as far as R. Austin Freeman's Doctor Thorndyke series, and I recall Robert van Gulik describing it as the norm in old Chinese mysteries.

I don't know what the episode title is, but there was an ep of CSI where they did this (I do know that William Sadler was the guest villain of the week). - umrguy42
