Corrected the quote from Mark Twain in the opening. The phrase was a ducal salary, that is, befitting a duke, as opposed to a dual salary, which is vague and confusing.

—- Motion to delete the Deus Ex example on the grounds that this isn't really a trope that applies in video games. Even in games with autoaim, some weapons usually have some built-in inaccuracy; for example the stormtrooper rifle in Dark Forces. Precise weapons might actually be the exception. —DocumentN

Silent Hunter: Sorry, didn't fully code the The Bourne Supremacy example. Hope I didn't spoil anyone.
Fast Eddie: Pulled ....
"Far Cry was a game of many frustrations. While the scenery was expansive and pretty, you couldn't spend much time admiring it before finding your body attempting to occupy the same space as ten million billion bullets fired by enemies with telescopic X-ray vision who could see you hiding in a bush nine thousand yards away, possibly owing to your relentlessly ugly shirt. It was the kind of game where you have to bind Quicksave and Quickload to the left and right mouse buttons before you can get anywhere."

Mr Death: Pulled this, because it's inaccurate, from the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen entry:

  • ...except in the movie, where he uses a shotgun. Where most weapons are far more accurate than their average users, most of the shots he (and Tom Sawyer) take are physically impossible with that weapon. Even using slug cartridges instead of buckshot.

This isn't quite accurate, since you can't even fire a gun that you don't know how to use (presumably it takes special skill to learn how to pull the trigger of a pistol, or to figure out how to fire a laser pistol that doesn't seem to have one.) Any gun that you do use will break after five shots regardless of your skill:

  • System Shock 2 works much the same way. Pick up a gun you don't know how to use, and not only will you not hit anything with it, the gun will break after five shots.

Nayhem: Categorized everything. Absolutely sure I didn't break the page, but please give it a look over.
