From You Know That Thing Where:

Seth Do we have an entry for the echo effect that is usualy placed on audio during a Flash Back?

Tangent 128: I saw that parodied on The Fairly Odd Parents- I forget the episode name, but several Flash Back-s occured, each time preceded by a character providing the echo themselves: "...while he was away at summer camp...camp...camp." Maybe Summer Camp Camp Camp? edit: There is the misleadingly-named Flash Back Echo, but it refers to something different.

Seth Even if its not a blatent echo they sometimes add other effects to the sound so maybe something more general than a FOP quote. But Flash Back Back Back sounds kinda cool, or Distorted Sound, Past Sound.

Morgan Wick: Okay, how did this go from the concept embodied in the YKTTW debate above, about the echo effect used in Flash Backs, to an entry about a type of Flash Back?

Seth It could be worded better, definatly needs a clean up. A way to fix could be

It happens all the time, you slip in the shower or remember something funny and whoosh! You're in a Flash Back, and everyone knows it.(Here on) The reason why you know it? Its that little echo that almost every series use to distinguish this from the normal action. Typically, it's a slight echo or reverberation in peoples voices (or in drug trips/flashbacks, a big echo or reverberation)maybe sound effects are hightened. Either way this tiny subconsious change (Or blatent echo in parodies) makes all the difference to the scene.

Sound better?

Red Shoe: Wait, I think we're talking across purposes. My original understanding was that this wasn't meant to refer to the echoey quality of voices in the flashback (typically coupled with soft focus or a cloud border), but rather by the specific echoing of the last phrase spoken as the flashback begins. I think these are two separate tropes, one for the visual and audiotory cues to the fact that a flashback is going on, and one for the use of an echo to indicate flashback entry -- the later is not a "tiny subconscious change" even outside of parody, it's very blatant, and usually accompanied by a very specific musical cue as well (Sounds like someone plucking harpstrings). "It all started like this... like this... like this...."

Seth My original intent was the echoey quality of voices during the flashback, i thought of the trope while watching Strawberry Panic which had no such echo intorduction so I didnt consider the into when writing the trope.

The page could be rewritten to incude or cover the entry trope (Like this, like this like this...) but i meerly intended the audio effects in act During the sequence.

If you think this page would better suit the entry trope (Like the cartman example) then it might make sense to rewrite.

Red Shoe: Well, the thing that you point out is indeed a trope as well, and I can see now that was the original intent, but the "Summer Camp" example which inspired the title (and the title itself) seem like a better fit for the cartman-type examples. Perhaps something like "THX Enhanced Dream Sequence" for your notion?

Seth Suggestion: We remove the echoey quality parts during flashbacks and incorparate them to Flash Back as a sub trope and use this title for the Entry trope only.

Looney Toons: Why is this a score-and-music trope? Just because sometimes there's a bit of harp music instead of an echo?

Sinister Teddybear: Whoever added the firesign theater bit is my hero

Shale: Why thank you.
