Daibhid C: On the subject of secular British society, there's a wonderful quote from Terry Pratchett on the subject. It's not relevent enough to go as a page quote, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. Hex is telling the wizards how the 19th century Church of England works:

Hex:The chief function of the priests of that religion at the time was to further the arts of archeology, local history, lepidoptery, botany, paleontology, geology and the making of fireworks.
Dean: Priests did all that? What about the praying and so on?
Hex: Some of them did that too, yes, although it was considered to be showing off. The God of the English did not require much in the way of sacrifice, only that people acted decently and kept the noise down.
