iTroper: About the Orphanage of Fear trope usage... I haven't read the book, but I seem to recall hearing that it was actually a factory using child-labourers living on the premesis (and yes, that kind of set-up did exist at the time) rather than an actual orphanage. Does anyone know the real story behind that?
Silent Hunter: I haven't read it either (although I've seen two adaptations), but it was a workhouse. Slightly different thing, but families were separated there.
