Pokémon General Thread

While Brazil is most famous for the Amazon rainforest the country actually does have quite a few distinct environments which could be incorporated into a region based on it.

It also has the largest Japanese diaspora in the world, so that alone makes me pretty confident that a Brazil region will happen at some point.

I kinda wanna have a South Africa-based region.
But like.
Dunno how the provinces will be handled.
Is it gonna be like Unova and Alola (they're states of the US) and thus each province is its own region, or is it gonna be the entire country as a region?

for regional inspirations I'd want India and Greece first and more more mythological inspirations (and the former's biodiversity)

As far practical spots go, I'd say Brazil is the most likely option since the Japanese diaspora there would mean there is some reason to go on vacations there (family visits). Places in Asia are technical possible, but I think the entire mainland is likely be out for geopolitical reasons, with the possible exception of South Korea (and even that might have its issues)

Outside of Texas, I would like to see an Australia inspired region.

I'd also love a region based on Texas. One that actually understands that Texas is a large patchwork of different kinds of first and grasslands with only a relatively small portion of dessert.

But it's more likely we'll get one based on Germany or Brazil. Maybe Ireland?

If we do Europe again, I'd like to see Italy. The Pokemon Heroes movie based Alto Mare off Venice

I have two competing desires for the next Pokemon region. India would be a really cool non-Japan Asian location but I live in the Southern US too and I also want to see what they would do with it.

Astroid Videos simulates countless battles to find out who is the best and worst Pokémon in a 1v1 battle.

The worst is Cosmog, while the strongest is Eternamax Eternatus, followed up by Miraidon.

What? Hating Japan is a major part of Korean culture. That'd be a political incident. On the other hand, most of SEA should be fairly safe

SEA has its own wrinkles. The big issue with basing regions off "Japan's top 10 vaycay destinations" is that there is going to be a bias towards the "Global North" and against the parts of Asia represented there for one reason or another. That meant the only time Asia is going to be represented at all is through Japan, which we already visited four and a half times by now. the probability of SEA being represented there is slim as a result IMO. Improbable, but not impossible.

It becomes more likely if precedent is broken and another region of the Global South gets a pokemon region, something like a nation in South America, the Middle East or Africa. Those have their own issues (the Middle East government shad a historically low opinion on pokemon AFIAK and is in nigh perpetual conflcit with the latest being the Hamas thing).

Russia has its own wrinkles as a transcontinental nation with its foot in both Europe and Asia, but its likely going to be a political problem for the same reasons China is.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine that suggested the Philippines as a Pokemon region, about a week ago.

Not sure how viable that is.

I specified mainland Asia in the original post. But that excludes the Philippines. It might actually work since I think think it is as controversial as China, Korea or India would be for a region's basic. But I think it still falls under the "global north bias" issue.

Coem to think of it, is there a list of Japan's favorite tourist spots?

Manila, Philippines

Seoul, South Korea

Bangkok, Thailand

All of this comes from a top ten list for japanese tourists.

Okay, analyzing the list the Most Likely Asian ones are Singapore, Thailand and the Philipines. And other potential ones include Canada, California (Orre is in limbo regarding canoncity) and Guam!

(France, Hawaii and Britian were already used natch)

I thought Orre was supposed to be Arizona? Also the canoncity of anything not made by Gamefreak is up for debate so even if we consider Orre to be based off California they could still make another California region and just say the Orre games aren't canon.

The fact that we just got a region based on an area not on that list does suggest that we're not actually beholden to Japanese tourist spots

Also I think Singapore is too small to really work

Singapore can work if they also include Malaysia or a bit of Indonesia.

Probably Malaysia, because Indonesia is large enough to be its own region, so better off making it an entire region instead of just including bits of it.


As for the South Korea hating Japan thing, it's kind of a mixed bag really. Some cares, some don't.

There are shows for kids from Japan airing in South Korea, meanwhile didn't Pokemon Horizons got a k-pop group to sing the new opening in Japanese? Neither caused any real spark, or any spark at all.

Heck, that one travel list mentioned above, includes Seoul lol. Japanese won't come there and put it in their top 10 list if the people there really hates them.

They turned America into a New York region with some Chinese elements.

So maybe they can mix and match, Texas but with South Korean inspirations.

There's a difference between Japanese and Korean companies working together and the biggest Japanese franchise setting a major work in Korea. A KR-based region would be risking major blowback. Like, it's more likely that there'd just be some grumbling that doesn't actually have any meaningful effect... but the possibility of it becoming a cause célèbre is definitely there. And they can avoid this by not doing a thing they have no real reason to do in the first place

I kinda think they'll use a region their more neutral with like Africa or South America. Maybe Australia.

Some liberties will be taken no matter which areas they pick. They're going to want a desert and an icy area, if nothing else.
