I just wanted to concur with you that AJ does, indeed, suck.

Then I'm worst then AJ as I have elven pokemon in the grave in my nuzlocke but the good news is that I'm half way done with the game.

Something I have thought; I feel that Gen 2 dropped the ball when it came to the Dark types. For starters, compared to Fairy's introduction there's a shocking lack of type retcons. OK, Steel you've only really got the Magnemite line^note Blastoise is a good choice but you can't really get it, but none of the Kanto Pokemon got the Dark type retcon. Of the Dark types introduced Murkrow, Houndour and Tyranitar are post-game. This leaves what, Sneasel and Umbreon? For a type introduced to keep Psychics in check it feels mishandled

Sneasel was only made available in Johto in Crystal. So in the original Gold/Silver it was literally only Umbreon as the sole Dark-type available to the player before the credits.

You mean than. Poor psychic is now bad now that we do have a bunch of good dark types around.

Dark being Special sure was a choice if it was meant as a Psychic counter.

that being said it does track with how mishandled balance was in RB.

You can just tell that the first few gens were a learning experience for GF.

I think the special split was a bigger nerf to Psychic than the introduction of Steel or Dark. Meant they lost either a ton of offensive or defensive presence, reduced the impact of Psychic (the move) reducing a stat, crippled Amnesia, and gave miscellaneous Pokemon more room to tank them. Even if Skarmory and Tyranitar didn't exist Alakazam would still get hard walled by Snorlax.

Except that in Gen 2 psychic was never considered a "bad"/middling type like it is now a days.

On the subject of Dark-types in Kanto, I wonder if the Alola forms were invented not really for SM's benefit so much as LGPE's benefit. Almost all of the Alolan forms gain types that just so happen to be scarce or flat-out non-existent in Kanto's original 151:

• Three Dark-types (Raticate, Muk, Persian)
• Two Ice-types (Sandslash, Ninetales)
• Two Steel-types (Sandslash, Dugtrio)
• One Dragon-type (Exeggutor)
• One Ghost-type (Marowak)
• One Fairy-type (Ninetales)

Raichu and Golem are the only ones that don't really feel like they're fixing a discrepancy, since Kanto already had plenty of Psychic and Electric types.

It feels like Alola's regional forms were invented primarily to pre-emptively create a more type-diverse Kanto roster right before the big Kanto remake on the Switch.

Ice wasn't exactly rare in gen 1

Well, it had five Pokemon, one of which was a Legendary and thus basically doesn't count for normal gameplay. It's not as scarce as Ghost and Dragon only having a single evolution line each, but it's still on the lower end of the scale.

Not to mention three of those remaining four were all Water/Ice types, so getting an Ice/Steel and Ice/Fairy type also helped diversify Ice's own portfolio.

If LGPE was in development in any form before Sun/Moon came out, that just might be possible. The only non-Alolan Dark-type in LGPE is Mega Gyarados. I’m sure they didn’t want Dark-type moves without any Pokémon that get STAB from them (which is the case in FRLG before getting the National Dex), nor did they want no Dark-type anything. And may be right too; the Alolan forms certainly added more Ice-type combos (including pure Ice) to Kanto in LGPE as well. Even the Kanto Megas ended up adding a bit more type diversity.

Psychic got hit by multiple issues. Way more Steel, ghost and dark mons got introduced, it got hit hard by the special /physical split. The final nail was the introduction of the fairy type. Having a type do everything psychic could do (hit fighting) and more (hit dragon and dark too) was just too much.

The special split was a major nerf to psychic, but I don't think the type split did much to it directly? Indirectly it made a lot of dark types way more viable, but psychic itself wasn't especially changed

I think we need a way to differentiate between special split in Gen 2 (Special stat becoming Sp Atk and Sp Def), and special/physical split in Gen 4

But yeah, Psychic does gets affected by both, to a varying degree.

Update on the violet nuzlocke: completed the teal mask as a training arc, lost five pokemon in the final Kieran battle so I have sixteen pokemon in the graves.

Kieran: You might have beaten me, but at what cost?

Me: I don't know. How many Pokeyen did you lose?

Kieran: I’m an NPC, I don’t need that money as much as you need Pokemon.

I've also lost to Carmine but with how the game forces you use Ogerpon which btw is level 20 while her team is 13+ levels higher then you and Ogerpon is always in the teams lead I gave myself a grace period on that battle.

zero as I had a Basculegion as my last pokemon.
