All your payment w/e still goes through Steam, Sony isnt going to get any of that info. The PSN account is for Chat, VOIP and other stuff.

It's about control and/or data harvesting. Someone at Sony saw a bunch of players they could theoretically target ads to or something and thought this was a good way to do it.

I remember one comment from a place I forgor saying that “theyll make you pay for psplus for crossplay next”. I do imagine Sony might honestly reach that point down the line when already know how to tell which user are connected to psn. After how easily the 80 buck non-improved psplus was passed, I could imagine them thinking this is just a big stink thatll pass in a week.

From what I've read the official reason is actually reports and bans: Sony wants to be able to more directly handle those vs. having to work with Valve as a middleman.

But was it that big of an issue to basically lock out so many countries from being able to play your game?

I cant tell if the regionlocking is Sony or Valve doing. Sony is dying on this hill if the former.

How nice for Sony to take the one live service game people actually like, and find a way to fuck it up somehow.

This is one of those "Oh, I know what James Stephanie Sterling will talk about on Monday" moments.

Honestly, Sony just got their latest data leak last year, I don't trust them at all when it comes to that.

Then use two factor authentication and a unique username / password… as you should be anyway.

Since the game is on Steam, all transactions go through Steam still and not PSN. Sony is never going to see a single digit of a credit card.

According to the CEO they're still discussing solutions for countries without PSNs.

Its not the credit card that's the problem. Its that in order to sign up for PSN some countries require a photo ID or your phone number.

This was a very bone-headed move. I still get surprised by how out of touch executives can be.

I don't get it, what about Spitz's comments is "poking the hornet's nest?" All it looks like to me is trying to calmly explain that they're trying to work out a deal with Sony so players won't have to compromise just to be able to continue to play.

Potentially empty words, maybe, but seem to at least be trying to address concerns as much as possible at this stage.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I've reread those screencaps multiple times trying to see what the problem is, and I don't.

Its not those comments, specifically. It was comments Spitz made before those that basically attacked the fanbase for being angry about this.

It was only yesterday that they calmed down, hence those screencaps from the previous page, but its still not a good look.

From what I've seen (at least on the subreddit), public opinion is starting to turn against the review bombing and people are beginning to question its efficacy and if it's just hurting Arrowhead.

Issue with that is that the CEO and some of the staff even said that changing your review to negative on Steam is a good way to make your dissatisfaction known better then a blanket boycott does.

Its how Aspyr was convinced to put back in the pinup photos of Lara Croft back into the Tomb Raider 1-3 remasters after Patch version 2 removed them.

I've been on the HD discord a few times. I wouldn't have faulted them for snapping back even harder if they did.

Anyway, Helldivers 2 on Steam is now unable to purchase in numerous countries after it was announced that a PSN login will soon be required.

Man, this really ain't a great look for Sony.

No it is not. They're effectively public enemy #1 just about everywhere now because of this and the seeming revelation that it's the same story with Ghost of Tsushima.

I have absolutely uninstalled games that asked me to sign up for a third-party account after buying it from Steam.

I'm just really sick of how many hours of my life have been taken away by verifying my E-mail address if nothing else.

Even with all their justifications on why theyre doing this with “stopping cheating” that it is so clear there is something more to it than that. Doing things like regionlocking and making people unable play their own purchased game is clear Sony is willing to sacrifice 100 countries for a reason. And it is completely reasonable for people go to data harvesting as the answer.

The CEO stating that “this was always intended” on Twitter also opens so many can of worms. You knew so many players wouldnt be able to play the game they purchased??

It sounds like they were hoping they could change Sony's minds before it even became an issue.

They're even mildly encouraging refunds as it puts them in a better bargaining position if their fans are that upset.
