This was just added to YMMV.The Fairly Oddparents:

  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Although rated “Y7”, the repeated use of “sexy”, sexualized male bodies (and in rare instances females), abuse at school and at home played for laughs, and an incompetent supernatural force that occasionally enables this to happen makes the show’s family-friendly reputation rather suspect.

[up] Okay, it's been a while since I last watched Fairly OddParents, but I don't recall it being a particularly gruesome or realistic look at abuse. Also, "incompetent supernatural force = adult"? What.

Cut it.

The Shin Megami Tensei entry on Video Games has weak reasoning as to why one would mistake it for a kid's game. It boils down to "there are some cute creatures" and that doesn't overshadow everything else.

On the same page as well, I doubt Baldi's Basics is an actual example. I'm pretty sure everyone knows it's a horror game, not to mention it literally admits to being one, making there not even a facade to begin with

On YMMV.Poopsie:

  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: You will find quite a couple of online posts on how the art style, combined with the concept and clothing choices for the characters, makes the series look like Lolicon-esque scat/vomit fetish porn made to groom children.

Is it just me or is it just people trying to make the toyline really uncomfortable?

That example reminds me of this one entry on the YMMV page for some spinoff of The Lion King about how the show's Toilet Humor was actually supposed to groom children into having a fart fetish, and allegedly everyone on the internet hated the show for it.

It was cut, just like this example can be.

Is What Do You Mean, It's Not for Little Girls? really distinct from What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?? Any examples that aren't Not For Kids are unisex...which means technically it's still for little girls, just not only them. Plus it might get confused with Girl-Show Ghetto and/or Periphery Demographic (since a lot of fans of shows originally meant for girls get really defensive that it's not really a girls' show).

In WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids.Video Games, there's this:

* Parodied in Grand Theft Auto V with the in-universe animated series Kung Fu Rainbow Lazer Force. It's a Christian version of Power Rangers made by fundamentalists with an ax to grind against modern society, presenting their bigotry against everyone from LGBT people to non-Christians to public school students to evolutionary biologists as "family values" and everybody who doesn't follow their narrow interpretation of Christianity as an evil sinner, to be violently splattered by the morally pure heroes. In short, Rockstar Games' parody of the double standards of American Moral Guardians, presented as way too prudish about sex but not nearly prudish enough (or even outright celebratory) about violence, especially when it comes to children's entertainment.

It is not this trope for obvious reasons. After all, the Western Animation page doesn't mention TheItchyAndScratchyShow in TheSimpsons. Should it be cut?

The page image for What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids? is very... unsettling, to say the least. Also, it has been pointed out on the Removing Complaining thread that this is possibly a photoshop taken from somewhere off the Internet. I want to post this here first before taking it to Image Picking.

In response to [1]

Lord of the Flies is School Study Media in high schools in Anglophone countries. Granted, "children's reading programs, notably ones that were created by and for people who speak English as a second language" could be referring to much younger age groups than that, but without more context, it's impossible to tell.

Since In-Universe examples are allowed, for consistency's sake, TheItchyAndScratchyShow can be added as an example from TheSimpsons in the WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids.Western Animation page since it too is a parody. It can be added under either the Disney folder (since the Simpsons is now owned by Disney) or in the Other folder (since Disney did not originally create the Simpsons and only purchased the rights to it decades later).

What do you think, PrincessPandaTrope

On WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids.Western Animation:

  • Sonic Boom has the usual makings of a loose continuity action-comedy, which doesn't make it stand out too much. The fandom in-jokes, sarcastic humor, and surprising flashes of cynicism, however, make viewers think it was made more for the teens and older who grew up with Sonic than the time slot on Cartoon Network and Boomerang would imply. That being said, one of the writers did take offense to a fan saying the humor was "wasted" on kids.

Okay, really? Sonic Boom is way tamer than other Cartoon Network shows (such as The Amazing World of Gumball), but the high amount of Parental Bonuses make the series not kid-friendly? I wonder if people put any kind of kid show here just to make them more mature than they think.

[up][up] Definitely cut that. The whole point of Parental Bonus is that it's a joke to entertain the adults while flying over the kids' heads.

As for Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, let's take a closer look.

Here's what it says on WhatDoYouMeansItsNotForKids.Video Games:

  • Shin Megami Tensei: a RPG with pixies and Jack Frosts... where the USA fall under the control of a fanatic Christian cult ruled by supernatural beings which uses the US nuclear arsenal to rebuild civilization around a fascist theocracy, and God really approves of what they are doing—and he's still the closest thing to a good guy in the story. There's a reason this is a game where the Omnicidal Neutral path is generally agreed on as the most moral.) First, God is not the good guy in this series. But that's irrelevant. As we said, having a cute monster or three doesn't mean this can be mistaken for a kids' game. In fact, the game was not released in the USA precisely because it was too controversial and extreme in its content at the time (SNES era). Remove.
    • Any game from Shin Megami Tensei/Atlus. For something that kids can buy, Devil Survivor has to be one of the most fucked up games ever (and it's only rated T!). Proving once again that parents should read the back of the box before letting kids buy video games. While the claim for Devil Survivor is true, it doesn't explain WHY this trope applies. Devil Survivor has an art style typically associated with kid friendly anime and a cast compromised of teenagers (thus visually fooling the potential buyer) but has content of Police Brutality, the typical religious themes, someone trying to commit suicide, anarchy ahoy, the government deciding to kill the citizens e.t.c
  • Shin Megami Tensei's spinoff series, Persona, gets it just as bad:
    • The original Persona was rated E. The original Persona was rated E. We're talking about a series with Mara, an Eldritch Gag Penis. What in YHVH's name was the ESRB thinking!? Later games in the series are generally rated Mnote  (including Nocturne where in Japan is rated all-ages, in Europe is rated 12+), so at least they noticed eventually. This example is wrong. When Persona 1 was first released in the US, a lot of the questionable content was censored in various ways. Including Mara. By the time of the PSP release, nobody mistook it for a kids' game due to the reputation of the rest of the franchise.
    • Persona 3. The main characters regularly shoot themselves in the head with handguns. And one of them is a fourth grader. But the visuals in the beta version made the handguns look much more realistic. These were changed as Adults Only is not permitted on console games. By the way, PEGI rated versions that don't have The Answer 12 (FES is rated 16). What idiot would give this game to a 12-year-old!? Other than the questionable "but" in there, unreleased and beta versions do not count. Also, the game was rated M from the get go.
    • Persona 4 is a colorful spectacle about a transfer student that moves in with his uncle, a respectable policeman and makes lots of friends! Not to mention the first proper dungeon is set in a fairytale castle, so it must be kid-friendly right? Wrong. There's more sexual themes you can shake a stick at (of which the strip club dungeon is the icing on the cake), your adorable 7 year old cousin is kidnapped and dies in the hospital (though she may return under conditions), and a policeman tries to rape two women. It should be noted that the game gets some slack as bright and cheery in comparison to the rest of the franchise. That said, this trope applies as advertising, packaging, presentation e.t.c emphasize the cheerful parts of the game
    • Persona 5 has a talking cat as the game's Deuteragonist so naturally people thought that game was for kids. Keep in mind that this is a game that has policemen brutally torturing the protagonist, characters tearing off masks which pulls off part of their own face, a Sadist Teacher that physically abuses male students while raping the female students, and a student that attempted to commit suicide all before you officially started the first dungeon in the game. The game never attempted to pretend it was child friendly from the moment it was announced. Doesn't count.
    • Persona Q added onto it, with the entire plot centered around the death of a teenage girl and purgatory, along with the imminent erasure of all the characters you love from Persona 3 and 4 implied if you fail. All encompassed in a cutesy art style to rival even the best anime! applies here. The dark part of the game cones as The Reveal, and it's presented in a cutesy - chibi artstyle.
