People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

The Nobel-winning South African author Nadine Gordimer has passed away at the age of 90.
Apparently, 2014 is not a good year to be a elderly Nobel-winning author.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Ag, man: one of the better things about leaving South Africa was being able to read her stories (I liked July's People a lot). Nadine, how many times did you get banned, in total?
Rest in peace. You'll be missed.
(And, for what it's worth: she's a far better read than J M Coetzee. IMO.)

We will never have a friend like him :/
"You can reply to this Message!"GOD DAMMIT.
One of the best stand up comedians ever to come from the US - he got way too little respect for his actual talent, perhaps because of some of the roles he chose to do. I wish his stand up career was more widely known than his acting career, though the latter was obviously also worth plenty of praise.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Damn. Suicide, apparently. My heart goes out to his family.
....Almost makes me forgive him for Patch Adams...almost.
"We're wasting all kinds of wood out there..." - Walt BayesPatch Adams was amazing.
You're not....serious...are you?
"We're wasting all kinds of wood out there..." - Walt BayesI liked it too. It was not his best movie, but it was still a good movie.
This marks the second time ever I've agreed with Thorn on something.
Well I'm glad you're keeping track.
Whaaaaa.....
That is all.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I'm officially weeping now. I didn't even knew that much about him, or so many of his movies, but there was something about him that made him incredibly heartening, from my point of view he was a bit like Fred Rogers (as I didn't grow up with the man, his show never being exported to France).
I didn't know him much, but that still hurts that depression took a man that could bring so much cheer, even on a still photograph.
Look upon my R.O.U.S., ye mighty, and despair!Um, am I missing something? Because that's a You Tube video I embedded.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)He's talking in general terms, not just about the video.
I'm wondering if we will ever find out the exact reason for his suicide. The man wasn't what you'd call an acting failure, and he had a large fanbase both young and old too. Seemed so jolly as well; I'd never have expected him to end up taking his own life and leave behind 3 kids and a wife.
My heart goes out to his family.
From my understanding, Robin had struggled with drug addiction, and depression and had recently gone back into rehab in order to take control of his drinking and help relax a bit from his busy schedule.
On depression, as many folks know, it can be debilitating. I personally only had a very mild one a few years back and I managed to kick myself out of it, but it was still draining and it took a while.
