Creating Franchise Pages Wherever Appropriate

Go To

This thread is for questions regarding creating or cutting pages in Franchise/ namespace and Franchise Index.

As a reminder, being a Series Franchise doesn't mean a Work can have a Franchise/ page. For that it needs existing (not Red Link) and connected (official releases for the same trademark) Work pages in 3 different Mediums, not 3 pages for the same property in general.

If it doesn't meet those criteria, the section about related releases can be on page of the first installment.

Now, I don't know about you, but we don't seem to have that many Franchise pages.

For instance, Video Games. Take a look at this page. I guarantee that we don't even have that many listed in the Franchise namespace.

Also, I set up Franchise pages for Duke Nukem, Deer Hunter, and Grand Theft Auto.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to list multiple games in a Franchise page as opposed to a Video Game page?

Yep. The trading cards themselves might be a third, but they're covered on the franchise page, not in another namespace (so don't count)...?

Given the repeated confusion over animated films/series, it might be a good idea to crowner the question at some point, but first we'd need to decide on what counts as a film.

(For the record, The Lion King doesn't need the split, because it has seven namespaces: ComicBook/, Literature/, Music/, Ride/, Theatre/, VideoGame/, and WesternAnimation/. The only entry in Music/ is a soundtrack album.)

I just happened upon this thread while trying to figure out what the process is for creating franchise pages, and I have observations and questions.

I don't know if I'm keen on the three medium rule, and I think "minimum of installments overall" should be an alternative requirement for practical reasons.

After all, what do you do if you have, for example, a series spanning ten video games, where each game may have a lot of tropes that are only present in that specific game? That singular video game page for the whole series is going to get unwieldy really fast, yet can't be reorganized into a franchise with ten works because of an arbitrary rule.

And it's not arbitrary. It's how we define a franchise on the wiki. The rules won't change.

Uhm... I guess I should take a step back and ask what franchise pages are precisely for, because I seem to misunderstand their purpose then.

Thus I formally ask, what are they for? I had always been under the impression their purpose was to be a "hub" page of sorts for a large series of works to keep things organized (mainly in a "series-wide tropes go in franchise, work specific tropes go in each work's page" way), yet it seems that's not the case from what Reginald back there replied to me.

See Series Franchise. For our purposes, we're concerned with multimedia franchises, not just any work that spans spin-offs and sequels. It keeps the namespace from bloating with any work people find notable enough.

I see now. And I suppose requiring three mediums as opposed to two (which would be "multimedia" in the loosest sense, but isn't for the purposes of this definition) is part of those same measures to avoid bloating, as well.

Alright then. Thank you for the clarifications, and now I will be heading off and only return to this thread if I ever get involved with the creation and discussion of or issues regarding any (per the actual purposes and definitions) franchise pages of anything.

If a (for example) game series has many releases, in case the series has own name it can get a separate VideoGame/ page that works like a franchise page. If not, the first entry can be moved to include "I" in wikiword. A safe best is just let the first release list all the sequels and put series-wide examples in a separate folder to discuss how to proceed with it.

Technically the franchise would be Team Fortress as a whole, not just TF2.

Franchise.Hugo The TV Troll describes both the tv show and the accompanying videogames. Since that's not how Franchise/ work, I'm not sure what to do other than moving to VideoGame.Hugo The TV Troll

Would it be okay to make a franchise page for Dragonlance. We have Literature, Western Animation, Tabletop Game, Theatre, and Video Game namespaces as seen on Dragonlance

I think it'd be appropriate to move Creator.Cartoon Cartoons to Franchise.Cartoon Cartoons. It would match with Franchise.Nicktoons, since both are brand names used to refer to the original animated programming of their respective networks.

Though, just to clarify, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays could stay as is due to being a programming block.

Fair enough, I vote yes to the move

I'm pretty sure we can get the 3 namespace minimum easily

Alright, let's start listing off namespaces.

We have the obvious WesternAnimation/, but what else?

Video game (Cartoon Network Racing)

I thought the cartoon cartoons comics had a page but nah

I'm not sure Cartoon Network Block Party counts

Ok I'm starting to doubt it meets the minimum, it's 1 shy
