Why do Sonic fans act like being a child and being a genius mechanic are mutually exclusive? Child Prodigy
I wasn't.
I was saying it didn't exist for any of the Western adaptations of Sonic to ignore.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.No, Adventures keeps him being a super genius. He builds gadgets from trash and stuff like that.
SATAM doesn't make him a genius because if they did that, Rotor would have nothing to do. Notably, once Tails becomes more important in the comics, they phase Rotor out.
That doesn't happen a lot in Adventures.
But I'd have to rewatch it...more.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. There was one episode of Adventures were Tails became super smart, temporarily. I wonder if anyone working on that episode knew that he was supposed to be a whiz kid in Japan.
Neither cartoon even knew he was supposed to be 8...
And outside of his fascination with Sonic's plane, there's nothing indicating it in Sonic 2's manual either.
Only the OVA would make that trait apparent.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Tails repairs and adds a rocket booster to the Tornado in the less then 10 minutes it takes Sonic to complete Wing Fortress.
Plus, flying the damn thing in the first place.
I always died in Wing Fortress Zone and had to level select code my way to the Death Egg Zone (which I couldn't beat either lol) so I never saw that.
The Protomen enhanced my life.On the topic of skipping levels, it took me a long time learn how to clear the barrel in Carnival Night in Sonic 3, but when we got Sonic & Knuckles, well, Knux doesn't encounter the barrel, so the first time I ever got to Ice Cap or Launch Base it was as Knuckles, and didn't see Sonic's route until some time later.
I would've accepted the rocket thing.
But even the comics were ok with him flying the plane without being a genius.
It only became a thing in the games by Tails Adventure.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Tails being smart enough to fix and pilot the Tornado was a thing from the beginning, but iirc that being expanded to Tails straight up being a super-genius on Eggman's level and The Smart Guy of the cast didn't become a thing until years later, which is why it wasn't part of either of the early American tv shows' bibles.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Oh man...I couldn't stand the barrel in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It took me forever to figure out how to get pass that barrel. It's only after like a hundred more tries that I found out that you have to press up and down to get off the barrel.

I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!I'm okay with Tails being smart and a good mechanic, but over time they made him into a straight up genius, almost on par with Eggman, and I think that's taking things a bit too far.
I got past the barrel by jumping once but ran out of time on the boss, died, and couldn't beat it in time afterward.
EDIT: Found a fun thread about Barrel of Doom stories.

The Protomen enhanced my life.I actually learned the glitch to PHASE THROUGH the barrel before I learned the proper way. And since that glitch requires transforming, I never saw Tails' ending until years later.
That's actually one think I'm shocked Sonic Origins didn't change. If I'd been on the team, I would've STRONGLY suggested turning it into an elevator-type barrel. It's super infamous among us old people, but I wouldn't make kids deal with it.

Especially if the younger fans have no idea how to get through that barrel and have to suffer through the same issues we older fans did when the game first came out.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!I'm sorry for bringing up everyone's collective barrel trauma.
That's okay! It was nice remembering the "barrel incident" and talking about it with other people.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!One of the most infamous cases of Guide Dang It! ever.
"That we continue to persist at all is a testament to our faith in one another."That feeling is only retroactive in this case.
When I got there as a kid, I immediately looked up a let's play...not so bad.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.So, how's the Sonic Dash game?
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Oh god the Barrel. No idea how I eventually got past that. I just remember being stuck in an endless recursion of time.
Hahahaha every time a younger gamer says something like this my eyes gloss over as I rapidly age another decade.
... Not as good as Speed Battle?

I've always been the opposite, I see that stuff and go "YOU ARE A LITERAL TODDLER". But I've also learned to not care how old I am.
Tails is a child.
There would be no adaptation that only treats him as a child since his "prodigy mechanic" trait was introduced to the series proper.
Can't ignore that.
