Glory to HK is being removed online now.

https://hongkongfp.com/2023/06/15/hong-kong-should-not-evaluate-district-council-overhaul-based-on-western-system-of-politics-lawmaker-says/

Joephy Chan of the pro-China Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions said in a Foreign Correspondents’ Club conference that the District Council overhaul should not be looked at from a foreign (West) perspective.

While I somewhat agree with this, I don't agree if this overhaul is meant to empower those who are pro-Beijing only through and through.

Paul Zimmerman (naturalized HK politician) disagrees with this and says that because of the overhaul, those who are in power are not accountable.

HKFP editorial on how a shop in Sai Kung "received" visits from the HKPF and FEHD that the editor wondered if someone was doing their "patriotic" duty since it sold electric candles that supported the Tiananmen mothers.

Similar to the issue of a vehicle that was seized since the license plates had US 8964. The HKPF told the driver that the vehicle was seized due to problems of brakes and his plate, but no one's buying it.

This one's published in Chinese. But a poster in Reddit gave a translated summary. Basically talked about an unnamed person who was a victim in the Yuen Long MTR attack in 2019.

The guy, who was one of the victims in the 21st July 2019 attacks on Yuen Long MTR as well, was due to testify against some of the white shirt thugs who were arrested and charged, with the trial set on October 6th.

A few days ago, a few NSL agents came up to his apartment and tried to intimidate him into testifying against the other victims instead, including imprisoned pro-democracy legislator Lam Cheuk-ting, who was also present that day.

After the agents left, he went to the bank only to discover that his accounts has been frozen. Feeling very afraid, and with only HK$20k cash in hand, he decided to quickly purchase a HK$19k flight to London, and applied for asylum upon landing at Heathrow.

The NSL agent is referring to the HKPF National Security Department.

The Democratic Party will back 8 candidates to be in the District Council. Note that they have not been confirmed to be "officially" be able to run in the Patriots-only election.

This was announced by Lo Kin-hei, though he's also uncertain on whether this would work. He did say that it's likely one of the few avenues they have if they wanted to preserve the right for Hong Kongers to speak up.

"Interesting" assurance that the Article 23 for HK's own security laws won't be retroactive.

Finishing what the previous administration tried to start.

The Atlantic: The Hong Kong Activist Who Called Washington's Bluff. This article chronicles Joshua Wong's struggle to seek asylum at the US consulate in the last few days before the National Security Law passed on July 1st, 2020. Past presidential administrations have sheltered Chinese activists in consulates (Fang Lizhi in 1989, Chen Guangcheng in 2012), risking high-level tensions with Beijing in the process.

Wong's effort, however, was stonewalled by the Trump admin, whose diplomatic mission in the city refused to offer him sanctuary. The incident also came at an especially precarious time in US-Chinese relations: the Trump admin had been closing down Chinese consulates in the US, and the looming Chinese retaliation would've rendered moot any diplomatic protection offered by the US consulate in Hong Kong. Wong was arrested in September 2020; a couple months later, House Republicans killed a bill that included provisions for a temporary protected status for Hong Kongers.

"Seriously" not surprised by this tidbit.

Considering he's got an additional three months in his sentence added on April this year.

Kyodo News is reporting that SCMP journalist Minnie Chan has gone missing after a business trip to a three-day defence and security forum in Shanghai in late October. I'm not an especially big fan of the sensationalist tenor of Chan's reporting and her occasionally shaky relations with facts, but it's a pretty concerning development regarding one of the more vocally PRC-skeptical journalists in mainstream HK media.

Agnes Chow made the news.

Reports are coming today that she’s “allowed” to get her passport to do post-secondary studies in Canada. But police had to keep an eye on her when she went around Shenzhen as part of conditions of getting her passport back.

She also mentioned about getting away from her bail in order to be physically and mentally sane.

Not sure if the Nikkei article would be limited, but the H Kers that are able to live in Australia in other pathways that don't allow them to easily get permanent rights to live in the country are concerned that the bureaucray is taking a bit longer ever since PM Albanese tried to improve relations with China.

This concerns those who did help in the pro-democrat protests.
